Apparently I picked up a virus that caused most all the font to change from whatever the default font is, to something like wingdings. The font changed on the desktop, in word files, on the browsers (Opera is by far the least affected), etc. I removed the virus from the machine using Avast and I also ran Malware Bytes and cleaned up the registry. Unfortunately, the problem persists. Any ideas on how to restore things back to normal? Thanks

Thanks for the help Shawn, but that didn't do the trick. Unfortunately, I think I'll probably have to resign myself to a complete reinstallation. This machine is pretty screwed up at this point. Cheers:(

The change in fonts was caused by a microsoft update. There is an easy fix for all Windows OS. You can follow the instructions on the link below, or if you have access to another computer (no matter what windows os), just copy and paste the fonts. Type "fonts" in the run text box, copy all to removable, place removable in affected computer, type fonts in the run text box, and paste the fonts to the directory. Windows uses the Wingdings or Webdings font as its default display font when you install updates with antivirus software running on a Windows XP-based computer

Thanks

PGHCS:

Thanks so much. I did sort of a temporary fix by restoring the computer to its configuration of two days earlier. What is interesting is that this fix was just prior to a Windows update. I'm certain that the update will end up being installed again at some point, so I printed out the webpage you've provided so I'll be able to deal with it in the future.

Best wishes,
Mark :D
