Virus still there?

I had a virus on my laptop.

I tried the usual anti-virus scans but that failed to remove the virus so I decided to use a system image to get my laptop back to an earlier state.

My question is does a system image clear previous system files or will the virus be lurking around i.e. in system32?

Anytime you suspect your PC has been infected by a virus. It is not a good idea to use System Restore as a remedy.

The infection can spread into the recovery files. You end up creating a restored copy of your infection.

Best place to start is to download a scanner tool which will look for the source of the infection or other problems with your system.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

Make sure the following options are checked:

• Internet Services
• Windows Firewall
• System Restore
• Security Center/Action Center
• Windows Update
• Windows Defender
• Other Services

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

When you restore your computer from a image backup, it is a complete restoration. You can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced.

A system image recovery will format everything on each hard drive that was included in a system image, and will only restore what is included (see steps 7-9 in STEP TWO below) in the system image back. Be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose that is not included in the system image backup first.

That being said, it depends on if the virus was present on the PC when you made the system image. It would be advisable to run the tool suggested by johnsmith45jock.

Another thing to suggest would be running scans with malwarebytes and a known good Antivirus such as avast or antivir.

You can also try the eset online scanner.
