I want to upgrade from vista to the new 7100 beta and have a few questions. I know the programs are removed but are the other files such as media also removed. I have a large music collection on my computer and i cant transfer it anywhere else so if it does then i will have to hold off until i can.

Hmm? Programs are removed in an upgrade from Vista to 7? I haven't done that upgrade, Vista to 7, but I doubt there are any programs removed :P

Hi,

You could create a second partition and either install 7 to that and dual boot - or move any data you wish to keep onto the 2nd partition, then install 7 onto the first.

You need to boot from the 7 dvd.

When you start up - watch the black screen with white writing - it will say something like :

F2 for setup

F11 for bootmenu.

Your F numbers may be different - Press whichever key is the bootmenu .

Arrow down to cdrom drive, put the dvd in the drive, press Enter.

A few secs. later it will ask press any key to boot from cdrom - press Enter.

Hope it helps

Hi drobb, Welcome to the Forum.

Yes you can upgrade from Vista to 7 and no, you will not normally loose any programs or files, A part of the upgrade is to scan the Vista setup and check if all programs are compatible with 7. After this check is complete you will be warned which. if any programs, are incompatible, with the chance to break off the install to uninstall them or to carry on and risk whatever might happen.
All your Files should be safe, unless something goes wrong with the install. It is in your interest then to make backups. You can pick up an external HDD quite cheaply and when you have saved your files, you can disconnect the external HDD for the upgrade.

I hope this helps.

If you upgrade from Vista all your files will be saved. You can also fresh install and choose NOT TO FORMAT, it will store the entire drive structure to windows.old & you can retrieve your files afterward then delete the windows.old directory. You will however need to re-install any apps you previously had.

Hope this helps :)

I tried an upgrade from vista ult to 7068, and two programs were gone. One was an IPOD converting tool, and the Opera browser.

Very strange

when doing a wipe of the computer does it remove the partitions or can you choose which one to wipe.

You can choose, but it might be easier to delete a partition under windows so that there is no confusion when doing the install as you know you want the deleted partition to install on.

You can choose the partition you want. When the iso boot is in the format screen, select the "options" button and then you can select the partition.

For the others - Once MS is in Escrow and RC branches, they normally disable the ability to do upgrade installs due to possible internal changes that are not done in upgrade installs. I was unable to do an upgrade from 7068 to 7077.

This Can be bypassed but I don't recommend it, here's the way for anyone tempted to try it

1. Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
3. Browse to the sources directory.
4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000
6. Save the file in place with the same name.
7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

Some iso's available out there have already had this applied beforehand so it may upgrade successfully, but I don't trust pre-modified builds as you never know what else is changed, and I only get builds where the hash check verifies it.

Click on Start orb, rightclick on Computer, click on Manage, click on Disk Management. right click on the volume that you want to use and select Shrink volume.

Are you certain the poster needs to "shrink" a volume? That's only used to obtain unused space from the back (or front) end of an existing partition with data on it and not the way to create one from Unallocated space or even a clean allocated one. Let's see what the poster has first and then give the correct directions.

@drobb23 - Many times the Windows installer will fail to recognize an NTFS partition created with 3rd party tools and say the drive needs formatting still. Best to use the Windows utility when possible. What do you have for existing partitions right now, and if possible post a screenshot of the Disk Mgmt window so we can see.

Also if you have an OEM computer like Dell or HP or the like, you'll have a smallish partition that contains the image of the factory installed OS and you probably don't want to mess with that in case you ever need to refresh your Vista install again.

i shrunk the main c: drive by 20gbs and left the factory os:d alone. after i did that i started reformating the unallocated space i created. I now want to wipe the c drive clean because there about 60gbs of files that i dont know what they are. I am planning on moving my media to the new partion when its finished reformating. can i do a wipe without touching that partition or is there nothing i can do short of moving those files over to a separate device and then moving them back after i do the wipe.

You can format any partition you choose without harming the others.
That 60G's of files are probably Vista's system files and stuff. Make sure you have any personal data transfered from that partition before you wipe it clean.

So, you plan on wiping Vista from the Map? You could have just reformatted that partition first or deleted it from the boot image and then carve up the resulting unallocated space as you wished. The install disk process allows almost full partition management from within it, so all that could have been done from there. It's in the "Options" button on the "Choose Drive to install to" saection.

If you move your files over to the new Partition, there is no need to wipe C:\ I doubt that you would manage it either.
When you install 7 and you get as far as partitioning It should be easy enough to pick the right Partition to install to as you know that you want to install to the 60gig partition. You can delete and format this partition at this stage. Be very carefull not to touch the other partitions as you do not want to accidently erase your files or the restore image.
If you have any more questions about the install ask before you go ahead
