Vista upgrade to 7

i have found a Vista 64-bit Ultimate for $60 unused, which sounds like a great deal, but if i were to buy this could i pay a upgrade price to get windows 7 64-bit ultimate? and would it be worth it instead of just buying windows 7 new for full pop?

In less then 2 months 7 will be generally available for a 7 upgrade disk where that would allow an upgrade or even a fresh clean install with the upgrade disk having any genuine XP or Vista disk onhand to start with. I did hear thought that many problems could and may very well transfer over with Vista through and upgrade and a fresh install is highly! recommended? Is this at all true?

A clean install is always the most recommended especially if the present installation you are upgrading over has been on a long time. That prevents any carryovers of problems seen on one installation to the new one!

Don't forget a drive tends to see a great deal of clutter from now useless temp folders used by installers and other things that tend to rob drive space and even result in a higher fragmentation from any long time installation. Nothing ever tops a nice clean install of Windows!

Yes it absolutely is true. Microsoft strrongly suggests clean and so do most of us. I know re-installing the apps is a pita but it gives you the cleanest leasnest OS you are gonna have.

The difference between the upgrade and full versions of Win7 Ultimate is $100US.

You won't need Vista Ultimate to qualify to use an upgrade license. Any Vista version would permit an upgrade-in-place to Ultimate, though. Windows 2000 or XP would qualify for the Win7 Ultimate upgrade license, but you'd have to do a clean install. (I'd recommend that, anyway.) If you already have an OS that qualifies for an upgrade license, getting a new Vista license would be redundant. (One qualification: doing an upgrade invalidates the license for the old OS, at least in principle. Buying a new copy of an OS, to be upgraded, would permit you to keep running your current OS.)

I bought a Win7 Home Premium upgrade license, but only because of the pre-order special at the end of June. There are some aggravating restrictions on an upgrade license (assuming that it's similar to Vista), but the special price ($50) made me willing to live with them.

If you're looking for the cheapest way to get Win7 Ultimate, you could buy Vista Ultimate from a vendor who offers a free upgrade coupon. For example:

($180US.) The Vista version is OEM. (That's not supposed to be transferable to a different PC.) I don't know what the restrictions will be on the Win7 upgrade. I'd bet, though, that you wouldn't get the X64 version.

I had no problems upgrading from Vista Business 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate (RC Build 7100). The upgrade even detected and retained my custom document path, custom pictures path,and videos path etc. Only driver that did not work after was my Canon MX860 network printer, although the USB worked flawlessly.

I have even found a method for upgrading to RTM from RC. I will be receiving the RTM Win 7 Ultimate on Sept. 30th.

as we are getting so close to the official release I would check out your options re vista + upgrade 7 Vs full version of windows 7. there are various pre order options available which may make the full version the cheapest deprnding on which market you are in

well ok im not going to install vista(im running 32-bit 7) what i would do is buy this copy of vista, then when 7 is out i would be able to upgrade since i own a copy of vista correct? and i would save a little bit instead of buying a full copy of windows 7, a the same time i could upgrade to windows 7 64-bit ultimate right?

The installer for the upgrade editions will simply prompt and verify you already own a previous version of Windows when you simply place the disk for the previous version in the drive. You would do this on the second install that acts like an upgrade to the first you have and with the Vista disk you plan to buy see 7 activated.

If you already have an XP disk onhand you could easily use that rather then spend for a new disk of a version you wouldn't be running. Since that would be a clean install of 7 to see the second upgrade 7 over 7 you wouldn't have any concerns about Vista or XP for that matter whether 32bit or 64bit.

It'd be nice if this was true. The most commonly reported requirement that I've seen has been that the retail upgrade can only be installed from an *activated* qualifying OS. (That was basically true for Vista, except with Vista, the qualifying OS didn't have to be activated.)

I hope that your version, which is similar to the retail XP upgrade requirements, is true. I'm not counting on it.

I won't be running into that problem since the only upgrade disk I ever worked with was for 95! And that is long before all this since you could still boot from a floppy and run the setup there at the dos prompt!
