Solved vista to win7 upgrade

Hi I have an older loptop that came with vista can I clean/install/activate vista (it currently has win 7 64 sp1 on it unregistered) then upgrade to win 7 ? I have the product key for Toshiba oem vista THX for any tricks or tips

You need a win7 key to activate.

Yes, that is correct. There was no free upgrade from Vista to Win7.

If you can find yourself a Win7 key then the simplest option is just to use it to activate your currently installed Win7.

I just redid a Toshiba laptop that is maybe a year or two older than yours. Toshiba Tecra M7-S7331 Detailed Specs (PDF)

The hard drive was dead so I had to replace it. I then installed Windows 7 on it. There was no free upgrade path from either Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7. You will have to do like I did and supply a Windows 7 key.
