VLC has never particularly been any good at HD movies. Try MPC-HC MPC

Have you tried the latest release of vlc

Should play 1080p quality without any trouble -- I don't bother with BLU RAY -- I'm not buying into any system that has DRM and keys -- and playing BLU RAY on any device -- even a domestic DVD player is a lottery anyway -- not surprised why that format is failing abysmally.

I don't have any trouble with 1080p (full HD) with VLC -- mind you I always transfer movies first to HDD via things like AnyDVD or download from the internet. All the codecs should be there in VLC including things like H264.

Try PotPlayer.

Lots of options in Preferences..., but to make your life easy to begin with use the attached INI file (after setting Preferences -> General -> check "store settings to INI file". It should be placed in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\PotPlayerMini64\PotPlayerMini64.ini (to replace the one you find there).

SPlayer Portable does HD formats quit well. If you like foreign films it also has automatic subtitle download.
