Hey guys, recently i had an issue with windows that i was able to solve, while most of my stuff was relatively untouched, i did have to reinstall a couple of things like framework, codecs etc.
I remember that i had windows media player AND VLC media player options in the right click context menus but now i only have windows media player and when i reinstall VLC with the option of context menus nothing seems to happen, theres no play with VLC media player or add to VLC media players playlist, any ideas? ive looked around the net and some people say it has something to do with the registry but i dont seem to have the options that appear in the registry

Try this:
Open VLC. Click "Tools2 Then "Preferences" Down the bottom Click "Set up associations" Scroll to find the file extension of the file you have right clicked and put a chack mark in the box to the left of the file extension. Click "Save"
Now right click the file and click "Open With" and there is VLC!

same problem, but when I do the above fix, the setting doest stick, eg. if I enable file association with .mp4 the box auto unticks itself next time I goto the options.

Also prior to reinstalling windows vlc had the option of playing files it was not associated with as well, eg. I had mpeg ssociated with wmp but on the right click menu I had option to play with vlc instead. This is now all gone.

Context Menu VLC

Hi,

I have the same problem but didn't notice until I read your post. There's no "Play with VLC" in the right click context menu. I don't use WMP (was removed by turing the feature off). I'm using the 64bit version of VLC.

A workaround for you might be to create a shortcut in the "send to" menu instead, Then you just right click a file and choose Send To > VLC.

Copy and paste the following into the address bar in an explorer window:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

Then in the window that opens right click a blank area and choose New> Shortcut

Then browse to the vlc.exe file.

Default locations are:

"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" for 64bit VLC

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" for 32bit VLC

Once you've created the shortcut you can play a file in VLC by right clicking the file and choosing Send To> VLC

If your default player is WMP then just double clicking on the file should still play it in WMP.

Right click on VLC desktop icon or Start Menu shortcut. Click Run as Administrator. Then you should have the options you are looking for. If that does not work, you may have to uninstall and reinstall VLC and make sure "context menus" is checked in the features to install. Then run as admin.
