Hi Dennis! Welcome to SevenForums! Your post is a little hard to understand but I'll try to answer everything here.

Virtual OS software is a program (for example, VMWare,VirtualBox etc.) which can run another operating system (e.g. Windows XP, Linux, Vista) like it is just another normal program. This is useful when trying out Beta Operating Systems, or when you want to test different options without the risk of ruining your own PC.

There are two types of OS' when you are running a Virtual Machine:
  • Host - This is installed on your Hard Drive and is what you are using to run the Virtual OS.
  • Guest - This is the Operating System you are Hosting. It isn't installed on your Hard Drive and can only be accessed when the Virtual OS software is running

This means that you need the installation DVD for whichever Operating System you want to run in the Virtual Software. It is UP TO YOU! As for the password issue. I have no idea which OS you are running so I can't help you with that until I get that information.

that might be true. i dont have an operating system yet. so after i install lets say windows xp, i can choose a password? i also want to operate dial up for the virtual comp that i am creating. how g=do i do that coz i already have high speed.

ure the best.

Yes, if you install XP, it'll be just like you installed it natively. You can choose a password, set the time and date, tinker with settings, anything! As for the dial up.......Connect all the dial-up cables/modems etc. and then You'll have to change Network Settings in VMWare to use it's own physical network. I'm sorry but I can't say anymore than that, since I'm not an expert on VMWare Networking. I'll try callling someone to help out.

It's been a while, but you are installing what VMware product?

Try your actual w7 userid and password.

Once in, you will need to create a new VM machine.

You might need to create a VHD

Hmmm....vmware workstation should not prompt for a username and a password when you launch the application. This is something that the VMWare Server 2.0 product does as it brings you to a website logon where it wants your admin password from the host box that you are using).

By default, you get NO virtual machines with VMWare products. You would have to
1). Install a machine from scratch using that OS's installation disc/method
2). Download a pre-built virtual machine application from a vendor or other provider
3). Use the loaded Windows XP Mode VM and then convert it for use under VMWare products.

Have you tried logging in with no password entered? (just leaving the feild blank)..

Mine has a thing for forcing me to set a new password on my virtual Windows if I forget to do the settings for it in the virtual OS' User Accounts. The 'Set a new password' screen seems to ask for a password even if you don't use one.

I wasn't sure what VMware product u had insalled, had it been VWware Server 2.0 then as pparks1 said, after installing, you will launch it via browser.

http://127.0.0.1:8308/ui/#

the userid/password is same as your normal windowd logon ids.

I have note used Vmware Workstation so not what the issue is.

i installed it and it says guest. how do i change it to host? also am running windows seven on the my laptop. i installed windows xp on it. before i even inslled it it was asking for a password which i cant get right. whats gong on and what password are they asking for. i was never prompted to choose any. heeeeeeeeeeelp. please consider am a dummy. i also want to create several vpn.

Dennis, the Host is the Operating System that is already installed. In your case it's Windows 7. And you're trying to run XP in a Virtual Machine, so it is the guest Operating System. You don't and can't change that.

As for VPN's, I am clueless. I'm not very good with Virtual Networks, so I can't help any more than that.

Dennis,

Out of curiosity, where did you get this copy of VMWare Workstation 7.0 that you are using? VMWare Workstation 7.0 is not a free product...you would have had to pay a license fee to vmware for using that software. I would assume if you bought this from VMWare, you would have called VMWare to figure out the password issue.

If you copied VMWare workstation 7 from an illegal piracy site..I would get rid of it immediately and instead download and use VMWare Player 3.0...which is a free application and it works great. Note, if you did get a hacked copy of this software, I would THROUGHLY scan for viruses and malware on your computer as it may now be infected.
