W7 64-bit as slow as Vista 32-bit? Your experience?

No, can't say it has been as slow as Vista for me. That is one thing I like so much about 7. Faster.

BTW, how did you turn off background defragging?

Hmm its simply to totally disable Vista's Defrag from ever running again.

To the OP, Windows Defender is a POS and a Resource HOG, best get it totally disabled and use something better.

Download Microsoft Security Essentials.
Disconnect from the Internet.
100% remove any AV programs on your computer.
Install Microsoft Security Essentials.
Microsoft Security Essentials is the end-user version of MS's Forefront which is their enterprise level AV software.

Following procedures already given to you: Turn off defragmentation and only run defragrmentation when the urge hits you.

To avoid MS trying to download the latest updates while you are in the midst of something else, then disable the auto updating and run Windows Update when the fancy hits you.

Thanks but I wouldn't use MSE in a billion years. I am using AVAST and it's free and does not create any problems, and is also much higher-rated than MSE in the vast majority of independent tests. In fact, in many tests it rates #1, even better than NOD32.

And to the other poster, yes I disabled Defender and am using SAS Pro.

No idea why someone would not pay for good AV.

I can live with that over paying tons of $$ for Norton or McAfee (both POS).

1) I beta test nearly every AV every year.

2) Norton is not a POS (back that comment up), you seem to be living back in 2002-2004 when it was a resource hog but it was still was a good AV.

Peeps like yourself who make BS comment like that have not even ran the newer builds.

I do not class £30-40 per year tons of cash to protect my PC.

What contradiction ? (you do not read too well), I stated MS's AV was the best of all the FREE AV's.

This does not change MY opinion on free AV's.

Tight wads will buy drink and drugs but not pay to protect their PC's.

remm, I would not go by these ratings. You tell me which AV you want to have rated and I show you a test where it is rated #1. Interestingly enough most rate Norton #1 these days. And having used their 2009 edition for a while, I have to say that is pretty good indeed. But I still opted for MSE (although I have a free 3 system Norton key for the next 2 years). It has been one of the better decisions I have made. MSE performs great - on several systems.

For what it's worth. I was having problems with my new install of 7 64bit where unzipping and transferring files was extremely slow. After three days of scouring the internet and trying various bits of advice, I seen this thread and the advice about switching off virus software. I have Avast and tried unzipping a large file and hey presto it worked. My transfer rate has went back to 50-60 MB/s whereas before it was sitting at 8MB/s. Looks like Avast was scanning each file and slowing the process down. Hope this helps someone.

Thats why I like Symantec End Point Protection or any AV protection that has the option to have it scan or not scan when files are moved, copied, or downloaded and this gives you more control over how your AV protects your system.
