From day one after a fresh install on my then new machine i've noticed this. The welcome screen hangs for about 1 minute if i use a solid color for the desktop instead of a background. I fixed it about a year ago by using a background instead of a solid colo. I however hate backgrounds and much prefer black. So i made a solid black jpg and used that. Well, long story short, i think that background makes it take forever sometimes when opening a picture in windows photo viewer ! Fix one issue, the fix causes a new one. Welcome to the world of MS windows !!! :sa: I removed the background and pics then opened up immediately. So i seem to have a choice of either quick startup and slow jpg's or visa versa. Any ideas? And please no suggestions for other pic viewers. Thanks.

PS: the startup issue is obviously a bug in W7, and i know this because I've had it happen on 2 other PC's.

As far as I know, the actual size of your background JPG in megabytes determines the load times. The larger the JPG (ie. 1 GB) the longer the load times. Shouldn't matter if the proportions are 1900x1080 or 800x400. Just like how many icons you have on your desktop determines the load time of the desktop.

What's the size of your background JPG?

No, i think you misread. What i'm saying is the long load times were happening when i was NOT using a background. I tried it two ways....1-with a black solid color desktop that is selectable in the personalization window, then 2- a black jpg i made. So both ended up being a black desktop but one was a jpg. The jpg is the one that loads FAST.

There was, or potentially still is am issue with solid backgrounds. If I wasnt on my Tablet right now where browsing was such a pita, then I would duo some searching on it.

I just realized it's already fixed ! The fix was in one of the windows updates i installed a while back. So i set the desktop to a solid color and restarted. No wait.

I know, i've done that for years. But this had nothing to do with that, but the difference between a sold background and a jpg was all that was causing it.
