W7 ate my GRUB...

I did say in an old post to keep an eye out for this

So, being the curious monkey I am, I installed the 6801 build on a separate partition. All was good. Very nice.

Not surprisingly, my GRUB loader was wiped out. That's no big deal. I'll deal with that later.

What IS surprising and VERY ANNOYING, is that my Vista installation is now deactivated and is in "You may the victim of Counterfeiting Mode" . Black desktop, nagging errors, etc. WTF!

Curiosity may not have killed the cat, but it did BORK my installations. Bah. No new OS is worth this sort of hassle.

Apart from being annoyed, I'm curious as to WHY this has occurred. Any ideas?

It's on a separate partition on a separate HDD for crying out loud.....

I am dual booting with Vista SP2 Beta and Windows 7 and have not had any problems so I cannot understand what has happened to yours.

Both my o/s's has been activated and have the Genuine Advantage added.

I used my Vista Ultimate x64 key for the sp2 beta and a vista beta key for windows 7.

I never had a beta key for Vista, so the 7 instalation isn't activated. I knew that I'd only have the limited time to play with it. But yeah, I'm still a little bamboozled as to why Vista is affected.

Despite it all, I do like the direction W7 is heading

The plot thickens...

I removed the beta and Vista still remained deactivated. So I decided to install Vista again on the empty partition (dual boot Vista and Vista) and lo and behold, the original installation re-activated :huh:

I now have my desktop back, Windows Updates are working etc HOWEVER, I still have the "This Copy of Windows is not genuine" notice in the bottom right hand corner.

To me, this is utterly odd behavior:huh:

The only thing I can think of is that when I installed the beta, it over-rode something in my original installations c:\ drives boot folder.

I must admit my knowledge of activation procedures / locations is somewhat limited. I'm sure it would be a simple answer for someone in the know

I just reinstalled the beta and now it's activated (unlike last night) and now Vista has been deactivated again. *Sigh*

It's a pre-beta release.... That means it should work flawlessly!

Fixed it! I re-dual booted Vista again which reactivated my original installation. Now both Vista and 8601 are activated

On the plus side, by the time the RTM version is available, we can be a little smug and say 'oh, I've been using 7 for over a year now...

(Just like a lot of the Vista beta-testers.... )
