Hi All

When I restarted my laptop yesterday it booted into the 'Windows Boot Manager’ screen, which says to choose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool.

The OS listed are ‘Microsoft Windows 7’ & ‘Windows 7 Home Premium (recovered)’ and the Tools listed are ‘Windows Memory Diagnostic’.

If I go for ‘Windows 7 Home Premium (recovered)’ it starts up fine, but then if I restart I get the above again.

If I go for ‘Microsoft Windows 7’ or ‘Windows Memory Diagnostic’ it goes onto another window that says Windows failed to start etc. then tells me to insert my installation disk and repair.

When I boot using the disk it goes into the ‘System Recovery Options’ and it lists:
Operating System Partition Size Location
Microsoft Windows 7 0 MB (Unknow) Lo…
Windows 7 Home Premium… 231502 MB (C:) OS_Install

If I try and repair the first OS it says it cannot do this and to send to Microsoft.

If I try the second it says it has repaired but then when I restart it I get the same ‘Windows Boot Manager’ screen again.

Can anyone please help with this issue or advise as to where I might get help please?

Thanks for reading.

Ok mate and it would not be a bad idea to run the chkdsk too.

I don't know if you have CCleaner on board but it is good at cleaning out rubbish such as temp files and cookies etc and even running a scan for registry anomalies.
https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download < download from piriform.

If you do after the Analyse go to > Options > cookies and see if there are any that are linked to passworded sites you use and save them to the right hand listing by highlighting them and click the small => arrow . then go back to the brush and Run cleaner.

For the registry bit again click on the Registry and Scan for issues > it will run and if there are any > Fix selected issues (bottom right) and it will ask if you want to save those issues - always save as you can merge them back if things go awry. > do that and then hit Fix issues.

As a matter of good practice I always back up the registry after a clean install and before I make any tweaks to the registry - takes about a minute or so to do and safeguards you against any inadvertent wrong changes as you can then merge back the original registry.

Ran chkdsk and CCleaner as you suggested.

I've noticed this when I go onto disk manager. There seems to be extra partitions that I cannot seem to get rid of! Any ideas how I can or whether I should?

I don't know if you should get rid of the partitions, that's something you need to decide. If you want to remove them, I suggest "Partition Wizard". Visit the following link for more details;

Use excellent partition magic to remove partition easily and safely.

Those partitions don't get there accidentally. Did you create them and if not, who did?

You can assign them a letter in Disk Mgmt to see what's on them and post back the drive contents when you open it in Explorer. Or you can just delete each of them in Disk Mgmt now and if you want absorb the space into C using How to extend partition easily with Partition Wizard - video help.

Look in msconfig>Boot tab for the extra unbootable OS listing to highlight and Delete.

Then go to System Protection to reset System Restore by clicking Configure, highlighting the correct C listing, then apply it, confirm enough disk space is apportioned. System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

Thanks everybody. I've now just got the two partitions and a laptop that boots without error!

Just a couple more things (for now!) if you don't mind
- my BIOS drive is red on my computer as there is only 206mb free, should I extend this to take it out of the red?
- I've seen it said that it is imprtant to maintain and keep an eye on your SSD, is this correct and if so how? I have Crucial MX100 256 GB.

Thanks again

Where is the drive contents screenshots I asked you to post back so we have an idea what is on those partitions? We can't see the size on disk listings for Disk Mgmt so we have no idea how much space is used on them.

I have no idea what a BIOS partition is as this is unusual. Who created it? Do you have the latest BIOS update? I don't think it's needed at all but need to see the contents.
