Hi all,

after you guys solved all my problems i had with my old pc, i decided to take ur advice and bought a new one.

When i tried to install windows 7, the installation basically stops when it is 'Expanding Files' at 0%. Now i've tried to search this site for some answers, but the only thing i got was to reburn the dvd. Ofcourse i could try this, but the dvd never gave me any problems during previous installations on the old machine. im wondering what is going wrong and how to fix it :)

specs;
AMD Phenom x4 940, 2.5 gb ram and what not (its second hand :))

thanks for ur time and help

Hopefully, you are doing a clean installation. Assuming that you are, make sure everything is disconnect from the computer except the monitor, mouse and keyboard. Uninstall A/V and the firewall. Make sure that if you are installing a 64 bit, you have the required specifications and space. Actually make sure you have enough space for 32, also.

I would try to burn the DVD, again, this time at a slow speed 4X is suggested. Because it worked before, does not mean it will work again, so try to start fresh. First use windows upgrade advisosr, see what it says. You can get it from microsoft site.

try using one stick of ram at a time. Also, trying doing a checkdisk on the hard drive you are installing on.

Check for firmware update on your optical drive.

Try another bootable installer (Vista or XP) to see if it will boot and install. This eliminates OD, but makes your ISO or burn more suspect. Use ImgBurn at 4x with Verify.

As suggested, run Chkdsk /r using Command Line in booted Win7 installer Repair console.

Download and burn to CD the HD diagnostics for your model, boot and diagnose/repair. GW Scan works on most. Seagate has their own Seatools. Check manufacturer's downloads page.

Use the GW Scan disk or Dban to also zero out the HD.

unfortunately, i havent been able to install windows 7 using ur tips. ive tried gwscan, a new copy of w7, one stick of ram and a clean installation..

thanks for the help and if any of you guys has any tricks left, please let me know

Look in your BIOS and make sure SATA controller is set to AHCI.

Did you try a Vista or XP disk to see if they would boot and proceed with install?

Can you load your Win7 files into a primary-formatted USB flash stick and boot via F-key given on first screen for Boot Menu? It will be listed as a hard drive. This will eliminate the DVD, burn and optical drive as cause.

Files copying/expanding stall is almost always the DVD, burn, ISO. If it stalls with flash stick then it is the ISO, BIOS settings or hardware.

3 operating systems that fail to install lead me to believe that the system has a hardware issue. I would suggest stripping the system down to the basics, 1 stick ram, processor, 1 hard drive, cdrom, and graphics and try installing that way. If it still fails you might even replace those parts with others if you have them.

1 OS fails to install ok but 3 really sends up red flags especially if it is a used machine.

I had the same problem and I tried everything I could find in several forums with no luck. I could not install Vista or Win 7. It would lock up my computer everytime at expanding files. I finally found a solution by disabling Intel Speed Stepping in my bios. This is some sort of energy saving thing for the CPU and it changes the CPU voltage. I think this is called Hyper Transport for AMD chip motherboards. After I disabled this, the OS installed with no problem. Hope this helps.
