Solved W7 x64 - shuts down when going to sleep

I recently had some help from one of the experts here to fix an issue with windows updates, now resolved however there is a side effect... I had to do a repair install of W7x64 and following this I had to do a bunch of updates again, which seemed normal.
However, now when I sleep the computer the power is lost completely and I can't turn it back on from the keyboard or mouse, only the power button will "wake" the machine.
When I "wake" the machine, the screen stays black, I can hear the fans spinning up but nothing appears on screen. The HDD light on the front of the tower stays off and doesn't blink as well.

Only way to get back into Windows is to hold the power button down to manually kill the power and then turn it back on again. I sometimes have to do this twice.
When eventually getting back to windows I get presented with the 'windows did not shut down correctly' prompt before booting as normal.

Things I've tried so far but not worked:
- new power plan
- hybrid sleep to off
- turned hibernate off, on then off again via command line
- reflashed BIOS

So, little stumped... not sure where to go from here... Any suggestions would be welcome, happy to provide logs if someone can direct me which ones to share.

Repair installs are not perfect.

Reinstall windows, fix it right or live with the problems.

And I guess you never created an image ?

Reinstall windows, install the 2 updates from Mike`s tutorial. Install the 1st round of security updates then go over each optional/recommended update 1 at a time to see if you want or need it.

I did 2 installs just this past week and they are both perfect. A lot of the crap updates are history, Windows 7 is back.

Already did a full repair install and all windows updates to solve the first issue (see link in OP).
Didn't have this problem before, so has to be something that's been done in the repair and update process.

Full wipe and reinstall is a last resort but I'm not there yet. To be honest if I have to go there I'll just go to 10.

As an update, managed to resolve this one on my own after much troubleshooting.
Went through the device manager and disabled the 'windows power management' for all devices I could fine. Partial success, this meant the machine would successfully sleep and wake correctly.
I also enabled 'ACPI 2.0 Support' and 'Repost on S3 resume' in my BIOS for good measure but unsure if they had any effect. Not broken anything as far as I can tell.

Small problem with this scenario is that WOL refused to work no matter how much I wanted it to... If i enabled WOL for the power adapter then the computer would just shut down when it went to sleep.
Turns out the Windows 7 drivers for my onboard motherboard LAN adapter were just a bit broken in this regard.
Uninstalled the auto installed Windows 7 drivers via device manager, downloaded the official ones from the manufacturer's website.
I've got a Marvell Yukon LAN adapter on an ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard and they're available to download as of writing this. These drivers from Asus worked brilliantly and now WOL as well as proper sleep/wake work fine.

So lesson learned... Windows doesn't always know best! Leaving this here in case any other intrepid internet explorers have the same problems, think I've left enough keywords behind for the google bots to find.
