why do you think American automobiles are so expensive?

This is a good one. Cars are by far the cheapest in the US. I own an older Mercury Mystique which is exactly the same car as the German Ford Mondeo. At the time I bought the Mystique it was less than half as much as the German Mondeo equally equipped.
Even when imported to Germany, the American cars are always cheaper than European equivalents - and that despite the transport cost, 30% import duty (in Germany) and the technical modifications they have to make to comply with German standards.
In Germany, you pay $30.000 for a standard VW no frills Golf with a small 4 cylinder engine and no automatic. If you beaf it up, you are in the $40K range - and that is similar in all the European countries.

What I can't figure out is why such a large retailer as Wal Mart (the world's largest) has only a few of the good deals. In the late 1990's, they had Black Friday sale on a DVD player for $79.00. They had thousands of them on hand. As big as they are, they should have had at least 2000 units per store. There was a HP laptop as well for $298.00. They only had a few. I was going to buy three of them to resell on eBay for $450 each. But I couldn't even get my hands on one. In fact, on eBay today, there were at least 30 of them listed, and they were all over $400. But the point is Wal Mart and their ways. I know the number that I said each store should have sounds high, but look at the number of people who shop there every day. Within a week's time, they all would have sold. But also, I don't think that eMachines and HP wanted to sell those kind of numbers for that price. That's the bottom line.

I think the massive deals from years ago are history. With the bad publicity with people getting trampeled to death trying to get into the stores last year...they have changed to more weekends of deals and nothing as sought after as prior years.

I got a DVD/CD player for $9.95 at HHGregg. I really only wanted a small CD player (matter of space in my Hi-Fi closet) because mine went belly up. But that's all they had. Works well. Can't beat that price. I sometimes wonder how much the people/companies earn that make those things.
