Hi having a problem watching YouTube etc. as I've suddenly started hearing my own voice in the speakers and headphones say when talking to someone in the room. Looked in Sound but couldn't find anything that stopped it so would much appreciate any ideas on what to do.

Thanks

It sounds like you have a mic enabled. Either the Laptop mic or the web cam mic.

Thanks I've got a Compaq laptop. Not familar with this area but had a look at setting up microphone and speakers, and did an audio troubleshoot as well but couldn't find anything about mic enable. I've only got the webcam mike or is there another one ?

I don't know where it is, but there has to be an option, probably in the webcam setup to mute the mic, or possibly just exit the webcam when its not in use.

You can also go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel, Recording section and disable the mic or webcam mic depending on how its displayed.

Unfortunately I can't find the in-built webcam and mike in Control Panel despite there being one and which has always worked fine.

However after selecting Sound/ Recording I did notice that the "Apply" button in the bottom right hand corner is always greyed out no matter what I choose, so that might be the problem ?

Unless you can change/enable something the Apply will stay greyed out. That is the way it works in mine too.

In the Recording Panel, RIGHT click in an empty area and then click to Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. That may make the mic show up.

Might be at cross purposes here sorry. I've had both mike and speaker icons always showing ok in Recording anyway, both showing a small green circular tick beneath the mike and another one under the stereo mix with an ordinary telephone.

Right clicking showed "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices" with ticks to both. But still the "Apply" button remains greyed out with only the click ok button left available. I've tried all sorts of ways to get the grey "Apply" button to go to black but still nothing happens....??

And just to make life more complicated the print screen in Paint has decided it won't "Save As" a jpg saying location is not available which has never happened before....!

If you are not watching youtube, not on-line, etc. Just the PC setting there, can you hear your voice?

It has to be the mic for the web cam. I have no idea where to access that application on your PC, I don't have one or have a laptop with it. But dig around, the web cam may be in the notification area (lower right on the task bar).

Thanks for your kind help !

Compaq being HPackard found the solution on their help pages, and although I'd checked the loudspeaker icon many times on the bottom right taskbar hadn't realised the loudspeaker icons along the bottom of Volume Mixer were also clickable to enable mute and open !

Great relief as I get fed up with listening to myself anyway !! :p
