Resource Monitor showed that this service was consuming extremely high% CPU. So, the predictable questions: what is it, what does it do, can I stop it with impunity or will that vaporize civilization as we know it? ;)

This is no time for risk-taking. Either you know what function it performs (above and beyond "Windows Connect Now" which means nothing) ... or you don't.

Did you read the link whs posted? Did you note he is a MSMVP? They don't give that distinction out to just anyone; it has to be earned every year. In addition he has 25, 921 posts just in this forum so you can be pretty sure when he instructs you to do something, it won't blow up your system.

How many different languages do you use?
I use one, English. I have that service stopped and set to manual. I only checked one computer. We have four Windows 7 computers in the house and I suspect the others have the same setting.

If you have a question about any of the Windows 7 SP1 services in any version of Windows, head here:

Thanks for coming to my defense. But the OP seems to be extra careful. That's OK because he does not know how the system will react.

For the OP - Take a restore point or better even an image. Then regardless what happens you can always backpaddle.

There is this thing called Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).
You can read about it here: Wi-Fi Protected Setup | Wi-Fi Alliance

As mentioned in the link provided by plodr (and on other websites), Windows Connect Now Configuration is Microsoft's name for the software that they wrote to implement WPS.

If you are using WPS (even Microsoft's version of WPS), then you might want to read this: https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2014/09/02/using-wps-may-be-even-more-dangerous/

A (very belated!) thank you to whs and UNI!

I did not recognize, at first, that whs' response -is- a link. In my world, links are indicated by very-different colors (not just a lighter shade of pale blue) ... or, more commonly, they are indicated by underscores (except this example of course).

Thanks again to whs and UNI!
