Error Code 1079
System error code 1079 means "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process." This error code may also display as "ERROR_DIFFERENT_SERVICE_ACCOUNT" or as the value 0x437.

I'm sorry, I have no idea how to fix this. I'm just passing on the "meaning" of the error code.

Actually, I'm rather confident that Jacee is right on the money. The WebClient service is essentially just one DLL in a svchost instance shared with several other services, and that means all of those services need to run under the same account context.

Q:\>reg query hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\webclient\ /v ImagePath
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\webclient
ImagePath REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalService

Q:\>reg query hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\webclient\parameters /v ServiceDLL
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\webclient\parameters
ServiceDLL REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\System32\webclnt.dll

For some reason the WebClient service is configured to run under a non-default account on your machine, and it doesn't match the other accounts running in the same svchost.

You can run SERVICES.MSC to ensure that the WebClient service properties specify logon as "Local Service".

It's kinda odd that one machine would be blighted by so many service (mis)configuration issues. Can you think of what might have led to this? Do you perhaps use "registry cleaners"?

This may function as a workaround. It will also make further troubleshooting a little easier, even if it doesn't "fix" the symptoms by itself. On an elevated (run as admin) CMD prompt:

SC CONFIG WEBCLIENT TYPE= OWN
<then reboot>

Note the space after the equals sign and the lack of space before it.

What happens when you try to start the WebClient after the reboot?
