I am planning on buying a Sata, external Hard Drive. I plan to use it now with Vista Home Premium 64, with my new OS 7, when I receive the DVD, in Oct., and finally just with 7. Does anyone have any experience with this hard drive and its compatiblity with Windows 7. Thanks

WD had a bad period for a couple of years in the race with Maxtor, but their products have improved to the level they once had, since last year.

If you connect the sata drive with USB2, it will be horribly slow.

If your computer has an e-sata connection, buy an e-sata external disk and the performance will be equal to internal drive.

There are also e-sata adapter boards to put into your computer, allowing you to connect the e-sata drive.

Just something to think about.

The performance of a hard drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure will be between 25-35MB/s. While some define it as horrible, for backups and the like they performance just fine.

In fact, on my work laptop, I've got limited internal drive space (160GB) and I dual boot Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux. Since I run a lot of virtual machines, I keep them on a Western Digital Passport (400GB external drive) connected via USB2.0 and it works just fine for my day-to-day use.

Without a doubt e-Sata is faster, but if you don't have the connections or don't have a need for the speed, it's possible that USB 2.0 will work just fine. The one thing that I really like about USB 2.0 is universal ability to use it. You can hardly find a computer anymore without USB...so you can always gain access to your data with just about any computer you walk up to.

A bit more expensive but based upon your advice, I think I would like a Sata HD

Windows 7 will -NOT- install to USB or Firewire devices....

Ain't got 'eSATA', but suspect that would be a NO-GO also.
