I have a question. As all you techies probably know, when you turn on a pc that has an external western digital HDD connected to it, the HDD turns on and off with the computer. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Reason being, I only back up to it seldom, and I often play loud music; I don't want my HDD on all the time when my computer is on. Is there some kind of workaround vs turning off the HDD right after it turns on with the PC every single time? (It's probably causing wear and tear when I do that).

Thanks everyone!

I use a power switch from Home Depot with a remote switch that is sitting on my desk - really handy and a cheap solution.

Since I am in Germany right now, I cannot look up the model number of the switch that I have in my home in Florida. But it is a little box that you plug into the outlet and into that you plug your disk. Then you can switch it on/off with a switch that looks very much like the switches on the wall except that it is mobile and you can put it anywhere. Maybe you remember the "Clapper" switches where people could switch on and off by clapping their hands - it is very similar. In Home Depot I paid $12 or $14 for it - do not quite remember since I have it already for a few years. I have several and I use them also on lights in the bedroom where I have the mobile switch on the nighttable.
