Hi,
There are several good brands, Toshiba, Western Digital and Seagate spring to mind in no particular order. If you have USB 3 on your computer you should get a USB3 drive. Most of the newer ones are that but you may find some are USB2. Basically you pays your money and you choose. I would look for the longest warranty.

There are many companies selling external drives but the drive itself is likely from Seagate or Western Digital.

I have been buying Buffalo USB and NAS drives for myself and family for several years (probably 2NAS, 3 portables, and a half dozen USB external drives). I've had an excellent experience with all of them. They're also priced very reasonably.

p.s. I am not a big fan of WD external drives. Based on my reading in forums over the last many years, they seem to have more then their fair share of failures. WD internals seem much more reliable then their external products

I have an Hitachi Touro 1Tb USB 3 external Hard Drive that I use for backups. It is powered from the USB port. It is fairly small & easily portable.
