I like MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) been using since I got this laptop, and have no problems since then, used to have pre-installed trail of Norton but it was quite a heavy program and could be a little tedious.

MSE and Avast free, in that order. I've used Avast free in the past with good results but it kept getting more and more feature rich so, on this machine, I tried MSE since it is so popular. I've been happy with it.

I've used Norton, McAfee, Panda, Avast, Fsecure, AVG, Eset, Ad-Aware, CA, Webroot, MSE & TrendMicro. I have opinions on all of them. Most are solid several are so questionable that if asked I will suggest avoidance or immediate removal. In the end these are all personal choices and as long as regularly updated and run are better then then best of the best not updated and run. What ever you choose learn to use it properly and then single most important rule is avoid those obvious sites and phishes that can be spotted form a mile away and if you get attacked update and deep run AV best from safe mode several times till nothing shows and learn.....always learn, we are the best first line of defense against attacks.

I used Avast Free for many years, but recently I felt a need to change, for the sake of change. So now I have MSE. I like the simple look and feel of it. Scans are fast too. Don't know how effective it is though. hmmm

I realize that there is no 'best' AV suite. But I trust Norton most. Never had a problem with it. On some systems I use MSE too. It seems to be OK although in the beginning I once caught a couple of nasties that SAS found.

In my computer club they were using free AVG and got a lot of trouble. They now switched to MSE and that seems to work well.

Like whs I have found NIS seems to cater for me and I have used quite a few versions back to about a decade on XP and now W7. Never caught any malware but it can be difficult to live with unless tamed sufficiently. I don't renew but shop around for the cheapest version of the one before the current and sometimes update to current and sometimes not. My NIS 2011 is due to expire shortly and I already have a 2012 version to continue with.

I always look for special offers in the Sunday paper. I bought a few for just the sales tax. They cost e.g. $69.99 but I got a rebate of $70. And since my wife is a rebate champion, I never lost any money - neither on Norton nor on other items. You just have to follow the rebate rules. Also note that rebates are not being forwarded - in case you forward your mail with the postal services at some time.

I've had nothing but problems with Symantec (makers of Norton) products with the exception of Ghost. Even getting rid of them was problematic.

My experience with MSE was similar. I had a couple of nasties slip through when I first set it up on my new notebook back in June which SAS picked up. Since then, MBAM hasn't picked up anything and SAS only finds the occasional supercookie, mostly from IMdb. I now avoid that site; the rare times I do use it, I immediately do a 1 day scan with SAS to clear out their *&^%$#@! cookie (I have cookies essentially turned off in my browser but IMdb parks their's in a different place instead of the cookie folder).
