What Does Your PC Do When You Sleep?

My computer(s) is(are) OFF.

Do you have any idea how much power is being wasted by leaving it on 22 hours a day when you are only using it for 2?

There are sites on the web that attempt to quantify it, and by any of their measures it's staggering. Do your wallet and the world we live in a favor and turn off (or sleep atl east) your machines when they are not actively being used.

(And that includes protein folding, searching for aliens or trying to break encryption at levels that are far below what is common and legal to use these days, it is actually a TREMENDOUS waste of power)

My father owns the local electric company and I'm contributing to his wealth. ;)

Do you have any idea how much power is being wasted by leaving it on 22 hours a day when you are only using it for 2?

Yeah, in the past few years I have become much more friendly to the environment and have made some changes which have led to lower utility bills and such. I switched out my lightbulbs to CFL's and I've started turning my computer off when I don't use it. I typically only use the AC when I need it, and then open the windows when I don't and use fans instead.

I've started recycling and my neighborhood actually implemented a program where we get coupons and discounts at local businesses based upon the amount of stuff we recycle in our can. Apparently they weight the can and it's microchipped to track our totals.

I've also started hanging some of the laundry up and letting it air dry outside. Things like sheets, towels and the like which dry very quickly with a nice breeze or a bit of heat from the sunshine.

But the question is, how much less is a conventional car + all of the pollution over the lifetime of the car? I don't have a hybrid either as I have my cars paid off and that is just the way that I like it. And when I do buy another car, it likely won't be a hybrid either as I intend to buy used and I probably won't find many used hybrids on the lot.

For every personal computer I have ever owned,

I powered it up when I wanted to use it,

then powered everything down when I was finished.

When I watch TV, I turn it on, watch TV, then turn it off when finished.

What's the big deal? They're both "consumer appliances".

When you park your car, you turn the key to 'Off', don't you?

Actually I prefer to leave my car "on"...that way I don't have to wait for it to "boot"

nope. i like to leave it on, just sit there, in the garage, and read the little stickers on the sun visors. i find the sound of the engine in an enclosed room somewhat soothing. maybe it's the acoustics, but it just relaxes me.

Mine too, also seeding, once or twice in a month a late night defrag. These days there's nothing big I'd like to download (as in from 30 to 60 GB), so I just shut it down. I heard it's really bad though, so from now on I'm thinking of just leaving it alone, with no work, and after 20 minutes it'll put itself to sleep. It makes his bed by itself, and after the wake up my daemon beast PC needs no coffee to unleash it's powers!
