What don't you like about Windows 7?

Its still annoying though I find, I preferred the old classic layout.

You can change the view to several different choices. I'm sure you can find one that you can get used to.

An awful lot of the complaints in this thread are simply peoples initial reaction to something new and different. Many people are resistant to change. It was the same when XP first came on the scene. I bet if many of you just give it a few weeks more of using 7, you will adapt and find that many of the things you initially didn't like actually represent improvements. It just takes some getting used to. Give it a chance and come back in a month and update your opinions. I bet if people would do this, a significant number of people will eventually acknowledge that they have gotten used to whatever it is they are complaining about now and have changed their initial opinion.

I only have one real issue with 7, and it relates to my monitor. If I shut the monitor off, and turn it back on, my monitor resets to 1024x768 resolution (default is 1440x900), and instead of my monitor's model being listed, it says "Generic non-PnP monitor". Bit of an annoyance having to change my resolution every time I turn on my monitor, but I figured out a workaround. If I just let the monitor go to sleep, the resolution glitch doesn't appear, so it's not a big deal.

I do not like the Homegroup concept. I like sharing files and folders like I did in Vista.
Other than that, I am quite happy with Win7.

Initial reactions? I just re-read this thread and found many distinguished old geeks telling about something they dislike or find odd or uncomfortable. It is precisely what this thread is all about. Besides, many of posters in this thread has been using different versions of Win7 long enough to know their opinion.

Exchanging opinions and experiences is one of the best ways to learn and increase your knowledge. I would not like to tell posters in this thread "Think first, maybe you get used to it".

I'll just say that I wasn't referring to everyone in this thread. Obviously, many who posted in this thread have been using W7 for a long time. I wasn't talking about them. I did qualify that my comments concerned those who are new to W7. My impression is that there are at least some persons posting in this thread who are relatively new to W7. I tried to make it clear in my post that I was referring to such people. Apparently I did not succeed.

The shocking framerates in steam games, Particularly the Episode 2 engine games eg.. Team Fortress 2, L4D, Portal

no problems here - i treated myself to the whole valve pack through steam.

so far i've downloaded l4d, tf2 and portal - they run smooth and lovely at 60fps (triple buffered vsync) at 1920x1080 resolution.

maybe a graphics driver issue?

How come, so many Windows users wanted "downgrade" from Vista to XP? Users, which really work with the OS, not users who have no clue about Windows Explorer at all. So many users, that MS had to admit! And now I read MS will stop Vista 2012. And I cannot see much difference in between Vista's and W7's Windows Explorer. Is MS shoveling their own grave?

Hey does someone know how to get Windows XP (WHQL) drivers working in windows 7? I am currently running a GF4mx (pci) in my C2D system (3.8 ghz, 2GB ram) and I tried to install the latest driver (93.71) for my videocard. At first the driver doesn't recognize the OS, then windows pops up saying it can use backwards compatibility. It installs alright, but as soon as I launch a 3d-app or want to have the system benchmarked I get a BSOD:huh: (talking about the nvidia driver). I think there will be lots of people with these kinds of problems with no updated drivers available.

First, I think you should have posted this here or here. This thread is more about, like the name says, what people don`t like about Windows 7.

Googling your GF4mx tells me you may have to replace the card. It had already known issues with Vista. Release notes for this card tell the latest drivers are for XP / Server 2003 or earlier Windows.

In my opinion there´s not so much you can do. My recommendation is to get a new card. Please remember this is only my opinion; if you post your question under category "Graphic cards" you may get some other advice.

with the exception of some early driver issues, many people downgraded because they were Mojaved/mind controlled.

but windows explorer in vista/win7 does suck. why the hell did they remove the bar of icons (delete, cut, copy, paste) at the top? i use QTTabBar to get them back in vista..but it doesn't work for win7 yet. i also don't like the way explorer changes its view setting. i know registry hacks to stop that "feature" though.

I like to enhance the right click context menu of W7 explorer by using the FREE (and compatible w. W7) Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2 which allows you to easily add (or later remove) among other things, the following items to the explorer right click context menu: "Copy to Folder," "Move to Folder," and "Take Ownership." Very useful and restores some easy functionality to Win 7 explorer file operations.

And one doesn't even have to install the app. It runs as a portable .exe.

I dont say that its windows 7 fault as the developer of the old software have not updated their products to work with win 7.

Removal of API's

Windows 7 along with Vista removed a few old API's that let some of my little explorer plugins work well with it. Aside from that the usual gripes about undocumented API's on microsoft's part and the way they made certain "features" immutable.

The only problems I've had have been software related (and very few of those) and that's not the OS's fault it's the software (in this case Sony Ericsson) I don't like the new network icon. I like the old one where u could see it flashing (you could tell if you had a network problem). Having said that, I've suffered no network (or any other problems) with win7. I can say that it is THE best OS I have used (and the first one I have ever paid for)

I dislike the aero animation when a window opens to full screen or closes since it feels like its choppy or trying to "snap to" and i dislike this irritating bug that says folder in use. other than that its the best OS there is.

Not sure if it's just me, but I seem to have troubles getting processes to end going through task manager (ie. WMP 11, IE8, third party prog's).

Other than that, I'm enjoying W7 so far.

Guess there is a reason why a driver is written for a certain OS.
I would just wait until Windows 7 is on the market.
