What don't you like about Windows 7?

Wow

Wow, didnt expect so many posts in here LOL. Couldnt read all of them, but will add my list! I also I have likes I will have to put in another thread.

Only issues I have with it are...

1. The same I have with Macs. Dont take this wrong I dont want this to be read wrong. IMVHO Vista was trying to over simplify things *like Macs, good for the everyday user, family, business owner etc. Not as good for us Gear heads. The thing I liked most about XP is it not much was hidden or hard to find. If you want to disable something or add something click click done. Like start CMD prompt, ok not everyone needs it but some do. Now I know Start type CMD, well I like to roll with the mouse and keep my keyboard in the drawer until I am typing or gaming. So I like to pin CMD to start menu. Now it isnt too hard, start run type cmd then right click pin to start menu! Should have expertise levels when you install "Advanced" "Beginner" etc.

2. Has a little bit of the Vista issues lingering around (especially if you do the upgrade install!).

3. This just started in the forums, I got a windows defender needs to close and IE needs to close! This is a fresh install, never saw this when running the RC version! Hopefully not a problem!

Also disliked the leaked versions being around the net while waiting for my 3 pre orders, I know I had RC free, but I wanted to re install and get it over with!! Could have done the time hacks or something, but thats not why I bought it so this was annoying.

Could you be a bit more specific? I never had too many issues with Vista (SP1 and later), but the ones I did have aren't present in 7, at least not for me.

The only way I know to actually get Explorer to show something other then Libraries is to pin it to the taskbar and edit the target box. In order to do this you have to hold the shift key while right clicking on the Windows Explorer Properties. Once you do you enter:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
in the target box and save it. That should allow you a view similar to Computer.
You can read more about it in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2863-windows-explorer-taskbar-icon-change-open-target-2.html

I have found no information as to how you can edit the Windows Explorer Properties directly from the Start Button.

Yeah well like I said it was nice to be able to click click click your way around. Keyboard shortcuts are nice, but for me KB is for typing, mouse is for driving! Google will help find where some of these things are, like today I was adjusting my folder options, not under windows explorer tools folder anymore, but in control panel, why not have it in both places?

For me every Vista machine I ever used including my personal ones and clients were dog slow! Always had issues and errors etc, major compatibility. A bit better after Service pack 1, but not fixed.

I have a dual raid 0 config in my pc, I tested XP-32 against Vista-32 and Vista-64, XP was twice as fast. All the hardware was obviously the same even the two raid arrays (one slightly larger).

When I replaced with win 7 it was night and day noticeable to me! Win7-64 is about 20% faster than my XP-32 on this same pc.

The ONLY complaint I have is loosing copy paste in IE-Love Win 7! HATE IE8! Using Firefox for the first time EVER.
One of the things I don't like about IE8, is it needs a one click option to turn off all of those annoying context adds. hehehe.

Thumbnail view

I avoided Vista and have just leapt from XP to W7. Generally I have to say I am very impressed. One real bug-bear however is the seeming inability to set the preferences for individual folders to 'view- thumbnail'.

I realise that I can set globally to thumbnail view but I dont want this both for performance reasons, and as in most folders I recognise files by name and application icon alone, so thumbnails are unnecessary and make it harder to spot the file I need.

In folders with lots of photos however the file names are typically meaningless numbers generated by the camera. Here it would be very useful to eb able to view files by thumbnail. This was easily achieved with 2 clicks in XP - those were the days!

hi n1ck300, welcome to sevenforums, stick around,

what's the problem? simply click the button under the search bar :)

...and each folder should remember it's own setting for next time you visit.

Thanks Mickey, I guess I'm just set in my ways, but will give that a go.

The only niggle with that is that I have to unclick the global setting to "always show icons, never thumbnails". Any files that I have on the desktop because I'm working with them then annoyingly show as thumbnails rather than as application icon and I can't seem to change that.

I'll just have to get used to it I suspect!

Windows 7 look nice features but there some problems: 1) WEI seem didnt working prefect 2) Explorer.exe kept crashing 3) no 4-colour MS logo during Bootup screen I think there some bugs in Windows 7 so i havent decide to stay or go back to Vista - I havent problems with Vista as I have some problems in Windows 7 so maybe I go back to Vista and wait for Win 7 fix the problem or new Windows 8. Windows 7 suppose to be working and suppose all hardwares but seem MS change some in OS system that softwares still sturggle to work with it (some software still not support until next version is release)

My biggest issue with Windows 7 is that it's harder to customize your theme than in earlier versions. I had to go to 3 different control panels to finally get everything I wanted. I have no idea why they changed that.

A minor issue is that there is no toolbar in the right-click menu to get back the Quick Launch toolbar. I had to manually add it as a toolbar. I don't like the new "pin" feature.

I dont know how you installed it, but I noticed installing it over Vista doesnt work as well as a fresh install! Otherwise you might have had a driver issue or something.

I have had Both 90% less BSOD and 20% speed increase over Vista!

I don't like how there are still bugs with HOMEGROUP.
I set it to share everything (docs, music, printer, etc). Save. Come back to the screen, only printer is checked.

Also, can not join homegroup I made on PC, with my laptop via wireless.

....I do not like the new look, and it does not function as a media player.. Replace with Kmplayer and be done with it..

Put control panel into large icons mode, and it is quite useful.. imo..
...
I thought I was the only one who still feels gutted about this control panel thing, I mean why create 256x256 icons only to show them as 32x32... GOD!! Windows 7 is great but I get sick every time I need to go to the control panel and be reminded of that....

  • Iv got control panel in large icon view but in my opinion it still sucks
How did you manage to do that?

my experience hasn't been great. after installing this Fri night, I had to get a tech to fix it. I still don't have my pst reinstalled. blocked out even after the Take Ownership. My cursor is jumping all over the place and takes 4x as long to type something, I don't know how do find files - I can see it mapped to a certain path - ie Local\appdata\microsoft... but if I try and find it myself, i can't find it. search doens't pull up anything. I am a frequent computer user but not a techie and I figure for the average suer, this is definitely going to be a change.

Overall I'm happy with Win7 except for 2 things.

1. They removed the frickin pinned favorites from windows explorer. I NEED THAT MS!!!!

2. EAC will no longer retrieve CD titles from freedb for me.

Other than that, quite happy with it.
