What don't you like about Windows 7?

I really hate the bs about "can't modify this folder," "can't copy this file," "must have administrative rights..." I've given myself administrative rights (after all it's my damn computer!) and yet every time I try to copy certain zip, pdf, and doc files from my old computer I get the same crap about needing permission with no way to do so.

I miss the good old days when your computer belonged to you and it wasn't trying to be a nanny.

I've done everything I can find to give myself permission but it still gives me the same old issue.

Because your old computer is a set of different users and different permissions. The easiest way to solve this problem is on the folder that contains all your old data. Set owner as Everyone and propagate it down the tree. Add Everyone in the permissions with "Full Control" propagating that down the tree.

Humm, not much to say about the OS...But one thing is the "Windows Anytime Upgrade" option in control panel that pin in my head, it is of course far less expensive way than buying the full box but you'll never be able to install on another computer if you decide that express way! In nine years owned three laptops and i start to think three years is the average...

Oh forgot...I have disable windows search to prefer the old indexing sytem. I can't bear it, but i do consider it is not part of the OS as it was already optionnal for XP.

I want to remove the “Libraries” function altogether, which I have made my new goal in life- because I absolutely hate it and if I cannot get rid of it I will uninstall W7 and purchase a copy of XP Pro, because unlike most PC users the only thing I use my C:\ for is the OS and the programs (which are backed up elsewhere) and a format of the HD and a new installation with programs is only about a 4 hour process and I have wasted much more than that on W7, I have been using Windows OS Systems daily since 1993, and I was around for the Windows ME disaster and the Vista disaster, the real problem I have is; M$ has not learned from those fiascos or listened to the dedicated users as to their workflow, instead they insist on trying to save face on the previous disaster when in fact they have created problems where they did not exist in the first place.

Well said. I'll probably catch a lot of flack, but I agree. Not only new problems and irritations, but a lot of the things I positively hated in Vista, are still problems for me in Win 7. There ARE many things I like, but I still beleve it has that Silk Purse/Sows Ear thing going for it.

As for MS not listening; I, as part of a user group, lobbying for the RETURN of certain menus/options/functionality, often feel ignored.

Apathy - You get what you ask for.

I am glad you like them. I can see the merit to them and know people who love the idea. However for the way I run my home network I find them useless and would rather they be gone completely. Not everyone uses their computer the same.
Keep the Libraries for those that love them, but make it easy to get rid of them completely. I too can see their merits, but like BunBun, they don't fit the way I use windows. As security threats go, anything that searches across drives and directories to put a list of all my files in one place rates pretty serious.

I'd like to rid myself of indexing too! Not just turn it off. Killing it completely I fear, seems impossible!

The indexing feature is awesome. It enables the user to search for files anywhere in the computer within a fraction of a second. Libraries are a wonderful feature too. They make file-management much easier than before. So, Microsoft FTW.

So glad you like them. I'm a staunch advocate of keeping them. They don't fit the way I use Windows. (Not to mention a possible security flaw) I just want an EASY way to disable them completely. Turning off indexing doesn't get rid of it. Nor does disabling Libraries.

For those conspiracy people out there, How about an Operating System that goes through all of a persons’ files, and reports key words back to the Government. Or a program that takes all of your Music, Movies, or other Electronic Media across all drives and directories, and makes a list to help prosecute those that make backups that might be illegal. Oooooo. While I don’t actually believe that tripe, it sounded good. Hehehe, Love fiction! :D

I believe they ARE still a possible Security Flaw.

Windows (Any OS) should tailor itself to the user. I want an OS that works for me; NOT the other way around. That statement doesn’t just reference getting rid of unwanted features. Features that I used have disappeared.

Good luck Mr. Phelps…. (Mission Impossible theme plays in the background)

:D Wish I could!
Complaining is the only way to let people know what you want. If nobody ever says anything, they will get just what they ask for. I hear people in the field every day; complaining about this or that in Vista/7. Here, hopefully, Microsoft will actually hear something. Unfortunately, this is a negative thread, and people other than MS have to listen to me whine. It will not stop me from being vocal though.

No hard feelings!

The official contact point for any issues is Help and Support although you may find that the options are a little limited.

There was of course a major feedback program during the Beta Testing phase of win7 you may find better technical feedback options with something like the Microsoft connect system https://connect.microsoft.com/?wa=wsignin1.0

The official contact point for any issues is Help and Support although you may find that the options are a little limited.

There was of course a major feedback program during the Beta Testing phase of win7 you may find better technical feedback options with something like the Microsoft connect system https://connect.microsoft.com/?wa=wsignin1.0
I'll try that. Bless you and thank you.

Edit:
hmm the system would not let me rep you again. I have rep'ed others recently. Just letting you know your help is appreciated.

You can disable windows search and indexing system, aswell libraries...for disabling librairies there's some good tutorials here in 7Forums.

If you decide to turn off Windows Search, you'll get rid of search bars in explorer and start menu. This will reduce what you beleive a security flaw.

Nobody will force to you to have what you don't want on this OS. It's up to you!:)
