One thing that made a big difference for me in making explorer better in 7 was to download the free "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" app (very cool app btw, now optimized for 7) Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2, a Tweak UI for Windows 7 & Vista | The Windows Club

and (among many other tweaks), it has some check boxes under "additional tweaks" that allow you to easily add (or subsequently remove) "Move to folder," "Copy to folder" and "Take Ownership" to the explorer right click context menu. I find these to be very convenient to have and use them all the time.

Generally I don't like tweaking OS's, had too many bad experiences already with that. But I will give it a try (you'll never know, it you don't try), thanks for the link.

thanks harpua.
tried Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2...the 'Copy to Folder' and 'Move to Folder' are useful to get things done fast... all the other 'Additional Tweaks' are also quite useful.

Glad you guys like it. You can run system restore right from the app before making any mods (can't hurt, just in case) but I have found the app to be very safe to use, although I have only used it to make very minor context menu changes so far.

Btw, if you want to thank me, don't forget about the "rep" scales (upper right corner of post, middle icon). ;)

have you checked out blackviper?

it's not a perfect list yet, but you may learn a bit more about services to disable, or better yet, switch to manual so they only start if an app requests it.

Thanks Mickey, that's really helpful:D

Oh well, one more thing about Windows 7 i don't like is the 3d taskbar(super bar now?). Yes, it is way better but everything gets clogged in there. If you're on a laptop and have many windows open in a separate window, everything gets pushed to a single icon instead of multiple ones(unless there is an option i have overseen which is pretty likely so).
I think i got so used to xp, the change is taking more than it needs to.
if you goto taskbar properties, there is an option you can change to only combine taskbar icons when full, this will make the programs in the taskbar look like they used to in vista/xp instead of the icon view, and also avoids combining icons except when you have many programs running. for me thats the setting I like, because I am used to the vista/xp taskbar style..

the only thing i dont like about windows 7 (and vista) is the lack of the up,cut, copy, paste toolbar in the explorer...i used them a lot in XP and it felt pretty much faster than right clicking and doing the same. The keyboard shortcuts are fast but i rely mostly on mouse than a keyboard.also the 'up' tab is much faster than breadcrumbs.
i also really don't like how vista and win7 explorer have no icons. wtf is MSFT thinking? i found a great way to get them back, but it doesn't work with win7 yet, only vista.

it's called qttabbar

you don't know by any chance of a tool that brings the "upper folder"button back?

or the "cut" "copy" "paste" buttons?

Instead of telling you what I don't like, I'll tell you what I do like.

1. When you have extensions enabled and go to change a filename, the extension isn't highlighted.
2. Having a search in the start menu.

That's about all I can think of right now. :p

Delete button would be nice too. :)

and they should make all those buttons appear by default. Every time I used someone else's XP I had to set those buttons up and the user had used the PC for like 4 years without knowing them and they were just amazed how cool they are. Talk baout doing someone a huge favor every minute they use the PC with such a small thing.

Really, the XP Explorer is all I want in W7

Sorry no. Don't know about buttons, but . . . if you just right click on whatever file you want to work with, the context menu pops up close by and gives you those options, plus more if you use the Ultimate Tweak tool to add those useful additional options to the context menu that I mentioned above in my previous post.

apparently microsoft thought we would use 'burn','share it,open,'new folder' etc options more frequently than up,cut copy,paste...but anyways that is no reason to keep away from 7 (or even vista)...It just takes some time getting used to the new interface.

How about this? I have grew very accustomed to Windows Vista, so I find it somewhat hard to upgrade, although the difference is not big.

I'd really like Vista appearance built upon 7 core. Hope to get that quickly.

I'm sure as more and more people start using Windows 7, we'll start seeing a good amount of themes made, and I'm sure someone will eventually make a Vista theme. :)

The superbar!!!

First off, I often browse forums that have "show your desktop" threads when I'm bored. The superbar just looks very "out of place" in all the screenshots. I think this is because it is not centered (ala OSX's dock) and therefore creates a messy layout (I know you can center it by inserting a dummy folder in front of it, but you still have the then ugly start button all the way to the left.)

Also, there is only one style to the bar so far (if you play with the color, intensity etc. you can see a kind of texture to it) whereas OSX has many different styles for its dock, straight out of the gate, and microsoft has a habit of making it imposible to edit such files until some genious figures out how to.

I also don't like the way the pinned icons look when they have something open (the [ ]] effect).

I HATE that fact that microsoft wants to decide what icons we can pin to it. I ALWAYS have the recycle bin on the taskbar, so that the only icons on my desktop is files im working with. This is only possible with various tricks in w7 - none of them produce the result I want (just placing it on the superbar, showing full when full - and empty when empty). And I don't want to use the, in w7, ugly quicklaunch bar (with large icons it makes the bar taller than the superbar with large icons).

I scrapped the new look of the taskbar pretty quickly, and made it look like the standard xp/vista (with small icons) because of this. At least I could still place the recycle bin on the quicklaunch bar then.

I also don't like the look of the start button when running in classic look. They could and should have made a window symbol instead, imho.

The superbar has potential, but only if microsoft makes it possible for the user to do with it what he or she wants.

Straight after installing w7, one of my drives clonks at intervals (w7 polling it or something) while the os is running. I got a feeling w7 isnt really using AHCI in the same way as XP, since - in XP with AHCI, that drive only clonks when booting up the PC - and after restoring the XP image (which I did yesterday because I had to grab something I forgot to place on another drive) the clonking is, as it was before, not there while XP is running.
