What Drivers to install ?

I find it important that the first motherboard driver to install is for the chipset and I follow that with the Ethernet/Network Adapter so I can get on the Internet to find and download any other drivers I need if I don't already have them.

I can connect wireless with win7 but with xp I have no chance and I would prefair to run win7 but if its a must I will downgrade

Is this a retail copy of Win7? Are you using the key that came with it and is printed on the packaging? Does it say Home Premium on it?

Why is it you cannot follow http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 like a million others have who enjoy a perfect install? The steps for drivers are printed in red so you can't miss them! Do you have any questions on how to perform a step ?

Use only the drivers provided by Windows Update after enabling hardware updating. Can I be any more clear about this?

OK I will follow factory oem win7 also this is a retail copy of win7 I am printing the product key that comes on the card on the inside of the case is this the right one ? I will follow instructions and come back if I have anymore problems thanks for the help and your time gregrocker much appreciated just hope I dont have to come back to piss people of again haha

No worries. The key on card will always work on same version if Inputted correctly.

Steps are same for retail.

Let us know how it goes. Once all Updates are done we can help find any drivers still missing in Device Manager if you have probs.

You can try using Snappy Driver Installer. Download all needed driverpacks beforehand(up to 7 GB) so that it will be able to find and install the correct driver without Internet connection.

If for some reason it doesn't help, you can post its logs so that I could assist you further.

Why would you do that with a driver-complete OS? This is not XP. Windows provides almost all drivers via installer and Updates. The others are easy to find or just ask back here.

Because Windows 7/8 is still not driver complete and it relies on Internet connection which may be unavailable, down, slow, have traffic limits, forbidden due to security considerations on restricted areas and etc. Some drivers aren't available via Windows updates anyway and the ones which are available are often out of date. It's true that you don't have to have latest drivers but it's nice to have the option.

When Windows fails to find the compatible drivers, you're forced to go to the manufacturer website. If the motherboard is quite old, the manufacturer might have long abandoned it and stopped updating the download section forcing you to go hunt down a compatible driver from newer models of the same maker or go looking for the driver on chipset manufacturers(Realtek, Atheros, etc) websites.

While Windows 7 does have fewer problems with drivers than XP, they do happen like in this case and I suggested the tool which can deal with it.

You've already installed so you don't need WUD Downloader which is only to update your installation media before reinstall following Update 7 installation media - Windows 7 Help Forums

Follow the steps in red in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 now:

You should already have your wireless or ethernet adapter in your backup to install if it is not provided during install. Plug in by wire to maximize this chance. Connect to your network.

Enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3).

Open WIndows Update to Check for Updates.

Choose all Important and Optional WIndows Updates except Bingware.

If Updates stall, check the Shutdown button in Start Menu to see if there is a ! which means there are Updates pending which must be resolved by a Restart before any more will install.

After each requested restart to install Updates, go back to Windows Update to check for Updates until there are no more offered. This may take several days.

Once all Updates are installed check in Device Manager for missing drivers, report back the exact name of any missing drivers showing a !. You can usually find them quickly by googling the Hardware Identification + WIndows 7 driver.

I took advantage of a hard drive crash to make a clean install of Win 7 Home Premium 64bit on my Toshiba P755-5274 laptop. Used your tutorial. All went well. Had to install the LAN driver, and connected to the internet successfully. Several other driver installs went well.

Cannot get wireless to work. There's no wireless network adapter listed in Device Manager, Network adapters. Nothing that says "wireless." If there were, I think I know how to get its driver. Only thing listed is a Realtek something Family adapter that seems to be functioning normally. (I'm at work, computer is at home, sorry I can't be more specific).

There's also a generic "network controller" listed under Device Manager, Other devices, that I haven't been able to identify a driver for, but I don't know if that's related to the wireless problem.

Is there something I'm missing about wireless on this Toshiba? Thank you very much.

Mike that Network controller is your wireless. Trace its Hardware ID from link in my post just above to find its named driver on the Toshiba Support Downloads webpage, or by googling the first Hardware ID string listed.

Since you should have Ethernet you can Also follow driver steps in my last post to get wireless driver from Window Update.

Alternately you could just install any wireless LAN drivers on your model's Downloads page until you find the correct one. Both methods take about the same amount of time

Use Snappy Driver Installer to identify, download and install the required driver.

Thank you, Greg, easily got the wireless working per your instructions. Learning how to use Hardware Identification was a real education. You and the rest of this board are great resources. Sure am glad I decided to attempt a clean install.

Still have an SM Bus Controller in Device Manager, Other devices without a driver. But I've read a lot of stuff here and will download the chipset software installation utility off the Toshiba support website tonight. Or the corresponding one off the Intel website. I hesitated last night because it seemed like overkill, mess with the whole chipset to get one driver, but it looks like that is the way to go.

One of these days I'll get done with "infrastructure" and start installing programs!

It could be an element of the chipset however since its 2010 chipset if Windows 7 provided newer (check SATA and USB controller drivers) then I'd only browse into unzipped chipset to try to pick up the SMBus driver from its Updater in Dev Mgr.

It could also be the card reader so install that anyway unless its present in Dev Mgr.

Otherwise trace using HID then find that device maker's choices in list at Satellite P755-S5274 Support | Toshiba or google Device make/model + Win7 driver. If you post back the info we can help.

gregrocker, I don't get why you are insisting on doing it the hard way. Sure if you have only one PC, you can afford going on a scavenger hunt, but what if you're in charge of hundreds or thousands PCs and you can access to the Internet only from a few PCs which are isolated from the rest of PCs. Would you be running back and forth each time you need to install missing drivers and spending a lot of time trying to identify devices and picking compatible drivers?

So much for Windows 7 being a driver-complete OS, by the way.

Using Hardware ID on the SM Bus Controller in Device Manager, Other devices, I got:
8086 Intel
1C22 Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller

I'm prepared to run the utility listed for Win 7 64bit on the Toshiba support webpage, but if there's a better way, I'm happy to hear it.

BadPointer: I'm not ignoring you. Thanks for your offer. But I'm learning stuff trying to do this "the hard way." Maybe most people just want to mash a button and have everything come out OK, but I'd like to know more about what's on my computer.

We serve consumers here, not institutions, which would never use a driver finder anyway.
