It's the "Indexing Service"/"Windows Search" services which are responsible for this process to run apparently. I'll try disabling them. "Windows Search" is a necessity at times right enough.Have you try to run CHDSK System file checker on that particular disk?

- Index documents for search,
- Prefetch frequently used files,
- Defragment the hard drive.
