I have 8 gb RAM and this thing is taking about 150mbs of RAM. Should I leave it on? I noticed this after I synced my ps3 with my pc to stream media directly from the WMP 12 playlist.

Yes, svchost is one of the most important services on your system. Don't touch it.

I have 13 instances of svchost.exe running normally. It is a process which runs several different other things. Each one is important, one of them is running your network connection for instance. Others are for the OS itself.
From techarena forums:
Svchost.exe is a process on your computer that hosts, or contains, other individual services that Windows uses to perform various functions. For example, Windows Defender uses a service that is hosted by a svchost.exe process. There can be multiple instances of svchost.exe running on your computer, with each instance containing different services. One instance of svchost.exe might host a single service for a program, and another instance might host several services related to Windows. You can use Task Manager to view which services are running under each instance of svchost.exe.

Thanks for the info.

8 GB RAM only means that there is more RAM for apps to faster load, but it does mean that W7 will use a lot of ram to place stuff all on the RAM. When my standby ram is 0 Mb, then I am worried.

IMHO leave all service host alone. As for your ram, my understanding in Windows 7 will monitor how the computer is used and the equipment that it has and over a short period of time will make adjustments all by itself. Windows 7 handles Ram just great. IMHO the days of tweaking ram is over with Windows 7. Their is a good little read here.

I agree, what is the point of having more RAM if you are going to freak out when it is getting used. The whole point of more RAM is so more apps and services can be loaded into it so that when you want to use said apps and services they are ready to go. My laptop is running 8GB RAM DDR3 1333MHz and usually has about 2-2.5GB used. Never had any issues loading AutoCAD, Photoshop, Firefox, a few PDF's, Outlook, and a few others all at the same time yet.

You got the point D247. If one has lots of ram and it is being used is that not what one byes the ram for. If in dough if a service host is okay, run security scans and see what come up. Their are some bad things that will pose as a service host.

I upgraded my laptop to 8GB shortly after I got it and out of curiosity I opened all installed programs (somewhere along the lines of 70 programs). Safe to say I didn't come anywhere close to pegging it out. :D
