What is x:(boot) drive?

Oh I see.I had fully wiped out the harddrive, including the preinstalled Vista,a utility partition and a hidden image of Vista. Then when I installed 7 it's a whole blank hdd in the setup screen. But now after I uninstalled 7 this x: remains.I guess it has something to do with 7.

If you boot to a pre installation environment/recovery environment such as the Norton Ghost Environment - what is that called?

Sources is on x:

as Windows and Program Files and Users are on C:

Yeh it's like BartPE and the likes, temp storage for running PE. Not sure how this storage space stays when ur done with the OS install though as int he case of X:\. It should be temp.

Yes I see that when I use 7 dvd.
But when I use norton ghost cd it's also there, and the x: root dir contains windows, users, program files (but they don't have many files as they are on c: ) and a norton ghost dir.
Since it has norton ghost dir it should be just read from the cd.RAM?if it's ram it shouldn't have 7's font and screen. So I guess it's kind of pre-installed environment somewhere on my harddrive. But it won't show up in the setup screen of both 7 and xp installation disc, nor in partition wizard.
Is this caused by a unclean uninstallation of 7? And does it have anyting to do with partition table?(since it's invisble)
Thank you.

I think you will find it is loaded into Ram - not on your HD at all.

I assume you can pick up the Norton.iso with PowerIso, or similar ? - see what files are in there - the same ones you just mentioned.

But when I load the cd,the screen with the loading bar shows "Windows is loading files" and "Microsoft Windows".And the norton ghost UI has a win7 dvd setup background.the background image can't be coming from the norton cd.
That's weird.

I'm repairing a laptop for a friend. their laptop is a Toshiba that they purchased from BestBuy.

Pressing F6 (i think it was) during boot would open up to a pre-boot diagnostic menu that runs out of an X:/ drive.

A myrid of small programs are available at this screen including a DOS prompt.

I used this to run a chkdsk on C drive as you can not do that while booted.

This X:/ partition is a Pre-BIOS enviroment and is built into the computer.

I know this is old, but thought this may help, and at the same time help me. I too, have the X: but it seems to be my Blu ray drive that is somehow partitioned off? Was having an issue with a bad SSD drive, and I noticed after messing around with that SSD that I now have Windows files on X:, which in my BIOS shows up as my Bluray drive. I show that I have 2 Bluray drives in BIOS when i only have one. Does this make any sense?
