Well the OP would like you'alls opinion on running McAfee and Windows Firewall. My reliability score is still rising. That is a good thing, yes?

My opinion and that of most here would be Miscrosoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Its free and specifically made for windows. All the others may cause BSOD and other problems. Use a lot of resources and are no better than Essentials. The windows firewall is good, too.

I just finished removing McAfee from my moms new computer. As soon as the new computer was turned on, McAfee started causing problems on our whole network in addition to her pc. I promptly replaced it with MSE and no longer have any problems. If you do uninstall McAfee, go to McAfee's webpage on uninstalling. They now freely admit that the uninstaller is buggy and provide a link to (what seems to be) third party software, which removes everything that gets left behind.

EDIT: Also be sure that you end your subscription. McAfee charges you automatically when its time to renew. They also say that the subscription must be canceled 60 days before the subscription expires or they will charge you for the next year of service. If they do charge you, call them and raise hell. Might want to look up the name of a lawyer to use as a scare tactic.

Is this a conspiracy? I feel like Kevin McCarthy in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers",
everybody looks the same but they all are working to take over mankind.
Actually with this many people, you can't all be misguided. So I will still mull it over and question.
The question is does anyone or group of members wish to expend the energy to explain in medium depth detail with current links to reviews about the efficacy of running Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials. Since there is little chance that it is perfect, could the minor downside be explained and weighed against the seemingly vast superiority in its use.
Now I read, and I don't know how old the article was, that MSE requires you to join Microsoft Spynet to reap the full benefits. IIRC! How many of the professed users have joined Spynet?
I currently, honestly feel that even Windows Firewall goes beyond my ability to set up properly with my limited experience. I like an interface that says do you want to allow, yes, block, remember. As opposed to the cryptic intelligent interface it has now.
MSE IIRC replaces Windows Defender, is this true. Is MSE as difficult for me to set up as Firewall? I've also read that MSE is totally definition based and doesn't have (maybe incorrect terms and I don't know what they mean, but have an idea) hips and heuristic capabilities.
Anyone care to make the case for these products? I would appreciate the knowledge. I've investigated it before and it didn't seem worth the effort. Although I wouldn't mind a little lyposuction of bloatware.
Lastly, is MS Firewall, MSE and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware considered the complete Defense package.
I thow down the guantlet. Whom will rise to the challenge?

Rather than give a long detail explanation, if for no other reason, look beneath my Avator, see that BSOD, it means that I do BSOD analysis. It is something you do not want. MSE is one of the few AntiVirus that I have not seen causing a BSOD.

I do not doubt your sincerity or passion. But I rarely take the advice of a stranger in the night. We've interacted as I have with gregrocker and others. You have been Greatly helpful in assisting me in various issues. You've taught me a basic tenet of this System, make backups.
But knowing you for such a short time, I don't immediately change my software to meet your recommendations. This is not meant as disrespect, but over caution on my part.
That is why an out in the open discussion at a level I can understand would be immensely helpful. I could ask (for Me) pertinent questions and see up to date proof, also see that it is within my abilities to control the Programs.
Again, I respectfully request the previously mentioned questions answered.

I've been reading a lot of articles about both McAfee and MSE lately, so I can tell you everything I have read. McAfee is currently receiving a lot hate world wide for releasing a security update, that on XP SP3 machines, deletes several system files that causes the computer to enter a continuous loop at start up. From the wikipedia article: "he damage was widespread: the University of Michigan's medical school reported that 8,000 of its 25,000 computers crashed. Police in Lexington, Ky., resorted to hand-writing reports and turned off their patrol car terminals as a precaution. Some jails canceled visitation, and Rhode Island hospitals turned away non-trauma patients at emergency rooms and postponed some elective surgeries."

On the other hand, MSE has won PC Advisor's best free software award for 2010. You can also look though the reviews on cnet and other websites where many people have reported getting rid of McAfee and getting MSE over something else. MSE has been commended for its almost never having a false positive. As it is made by Microsoft, no Microsoft files will ever be reported as a virus, which would result in system instability, or the impossibility to boot up at all. After a lot of testing, many feel MSE's heuristic capabilities are sub-par but they are there. I have placed the links to this and other info below.

Please note that I usually would not go through so much trouble, but you have been nice enough to ask and smart enough not to do something just because we told you to. Also, I don't believe I added a link that talked about the heuristic capabilities. That is because most articles I found were referring to the old beta from June 2009. I will add an article if I can find a recent one.

All the "experts" recommend it. Other software was hit and miss as far as recommendations. It was made just for Windows and I have never seen a BSOD caused by Essentials.

Hello,
After one of our fellow members suggested a look at a Administrative Error Event. Here is one that sounds serious. Can anyone give an idea of what is wrong?



This occurred almost immediately or during a reboot.

Uninstall Zonealarm using special tool Jacee linked above. Then install Revo free version and uninstall MucAfee in Advanced mode. Don't restart machine when prompted, instead click Next on Revo to Delete all hidden Registry keys in bold, then Next again to do the same with leftover files. Then restart machine.

Now turn on Windows Firewall and install MSE which takes 30 seconds and requires no settings, allow MSE to update and do its quick scan. You're done.
