What services do i need running ??

If someone feels they must (and in my opinion there is little need to do so), then set services to "manual" AND list which ones you changed. Then if there are any issues, you at least have a list to start tracking down the possible solutions.

Win7, while not perfect, is much better than Vista or XP as far as memory management or service bloat.

The only other recommendation I could make, and this is more personal preference than a real suggestion, is to disable "Remote Registry". Again, it's from personal preference since I've seen someone get hacked that way before many years ago.

Doesn't this entire debate boil down to personal preference?
Yes and No. People make the tweaks to see performance improvements. But if there are not improvements, then it's more than wise to recommend that they not make the change. It's the choice to do it or not, but I won't recommend it.

By all means, tweak all you want.

Things of the past.

After hundreds of installs and fixing a dozen strangers' computers a day one learns when problems are self-imposed or systemic - daresay even gains license to call perfect.

What part of perfect is so hard to understand: Effortless, featherlight, instantaneous, beautiful? It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Greg, l can see that you get are getting frustrated with the people that think they can outsmart hundreds of developers that created this system - and you are right, there is plenty of reason for concern. l think we all agree that it is is not such a swift idea to venture into that knd of "tuning grounds", there are safer areas for experiments.

I have kept the services in Win7 as they were originally set and have had no problems.

I do remember that some years back when I started with XP, I went into services, set them all to "manual" and restarted.

I ran the machine for a couple of days using all programmes/utilities/windows services I could think of, then went back into services, and any that were showing as "started" I set to "automatic".

Probably totally the wrong thing to do, but it worked and I never had any troubles.

Wolfgang, at this point I only persist in hopes that those with open minds may heed the warning and avoid a trip to the Crashes forum.

There's something maddeningly blind about insisting on the same tweaks and criticisms of Win7 as were necessary in XP and Vista. The belligerance is also quite revealing.

In the case of Services, I spent a month in Winter 08 editing Services out of Win7 beta with Vlite to see how light it could become and learned there was no savings to be had except in install size. But there were cascading unexpected consequences, esp with networking and security.
