Bios needs nvme module to be able to boot from nvme device.

Older machines don't have the necessary bios. Some exceptions - There is a new gigabyte bios for ga b75m d3h which includes nvme module.

Owners of the 2011 gigabyte ga b75m d3h mobo can get nvme support by updating the bios to the December 2018 version - like I have.

As always, flash bios at own risk
b75m-d3h-f16-bios.7z

It is then possible to use a pcie to nvme adapter for maximum fun.

I have heard SABERTOOTH-990FX-R20-ASUS-2901.zip bios has the nvme modules. I haven't tested that one so I am not certain.

SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 BIOS & FIRMWARE | Motherboards | ASUS USA

If there is no built in nvme connector, then pcie adapter should work.

lol nice... but the BIOS change log doesn't mention it..

as it turns out I already have this BIOS version installed/FLASHED..
it does have one flaw.. the mouse does not work in the BIOS in v2901
it keeps getting stuck in the top right corner of the screen...

It appears that bios 2901 comes with nvme support. I have googled it and it seems others have gotten it to work as well. I think I will be able to get only 2000 mb/s speed max with it since that is the cap for pci 2.0 since the card can run up to 3400 mb/s. Hopefully I can get it to work as a boot drive. If anyone with experience on any of the parts can confirm that would be appreciated!

If attached to pcie 2.0 it won't be as fast as pcie 3.0, nevertheless 2000mbs should be doable on pcie 2.0.

I have gotten my WD blue M.2 drive to boot with my Sabertooth v2.0 through PCIe using the 2901 bios update.

M.2 with PCIe adapter on 990fx? - CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory - Linus Tech Tips

On that mobo, if you have other boot drives, you might need to tap F12 or whatever it is to bring up the bios boot selection menu.

...if you are interested in doing this, the first step is to update the Bios to the latest for the board which happens to be 2901... Bios settings have to be adjusted in order to Boot the OS (Windows) from this device.
Dell has a page on general settings which is applicable at https://www.dell.com/support/articl...se-them-as-a-boot-drive-for-a-dell-pc?lang=en
Make sure you know what you are buying in terms of the SSD and you'll need the adapter card.

I used the following for the SSD and the Adapter card:

SSD: WD Black PCIe NVMe SSD I got a 256 Gb one and the exact model is: WDS256G1X0C-00ENX0
Adapter Card: Startech x4 PCI Express to M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter exact model is: PEX4M2E1

M.2 PCIe SSD work on Sabertooth 990FX R2

How about drivers, when you install PCIE cards, windows 7 retrieves the right drivers. Is that going away?
Because that would be worse than not getting new security updates.

Is MS saying you wont get ANY updates even old ones? Say you just installed raw windows 7 ultimate, will MS provide all updates up to a final end game point as mentioned that 2020 date, or will it not offer anything at all?

You won't get any more updates after Jan 14. I wouldn't count on there being a page of past W7 updates on the MS site after then, as MS tends to remove obsolete support pages pretty quickly. If you do a fresh installation before the Jan14, and continue to use W7, make sure you've installed all updates and relevant drivers before then and take an image of your system.

How about WMC, will people still be able to download playready? And setup WMC.
And what about Rovi guide data?
There is an EPG123 program that can be used with WMC and schedules direct.

Since the Vista updates are still there, Windows 7 updates should still be there, but new content wont be there, is what I think.

Been reading for only a few minutes but it seems this is legit. A service from a company named ACROS Security in Slovenia that has been around for a long time.

My first reaction was "micropatches that fix security issues on-the-fly? NO WAY, feels like an opportunity for exploitation". But they seem (perhaps) trustworthy and their service will be free for home users. Haven't decided if PRO patches are worth an annual fee (cheaper than MS).

I am going to seriously consider trying it.

Yes, I will use it on one machine to see what's up. It was referred to me by a reputable site but forget now who. I've actually seen it on multiple reputable sites.

Re: 0patch I guess it is not Off Topic at all for this thread, but if you do try it maybe you can post here and then start a new thread about it.

I think I am going to try 0patch as well, though in my case I don't (currently anyway) have any PCs running that I could sacrifice to a serious problem with it.

Hi maxseven,

I don't (currently anyway) have any PCs running that I could sacrifice to a serious problem with it.

You could always create a system image. This way, if things go wrong, you will be able to restore your OS back to the exact same state that it was when the system image was made in a very short time. There are two imaging programs which are very popular among members here, the first is AOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

I hope this helps!

It was discussed in this thread a few pages back.

Excellent advice! I prefer Macrium Reflect but I have heard good things about AOMEI Backerupper.

Windows 10? it's just awful (and subject to change at any moment with no control over that from end user). RIP MS as far as this household is concerned.

Some really good posts written back in late September by you and several others who responded and I couldn't agree with you all more. I've been doing a lot of thinking and a fair amount of research (which is what brought me to this thread) about what to do come EOL Day in January and I've pretty much decided to stick with my beloved Windows 7 until MS rips this soon-to-be unsupported OS from my cold dead hard drive (to paraphrase Charlton Heston).

I've always been a late-adopter...which sounds a lot better than a procrastinator. I didn't switch to Windows XP until the laptop I had that was running Windows 98SE finally died in the mid to late 2000s. Then I stayed with Windows XP until I built my own Windows 7 rig several years ago. IMO, these were all great OSs (for their day) but fortunately each time I eventually made the switch to a new OS I had something even better to transition to and by the time I finally made the move they already all had most of their early bugs and initial kinks worked out.

But IMO that ain't the case this time. I don't have a ton of hours using Windows 10 but from working remotely on my elderly father's newer puter to fix various problems and perform routine maintenance and software installation I don't much care for it. I don't absolutely loathe it like I did Windows 8 but I also don't like it nearly enough to want to put it on my currently smooth-running main PC either.

We all heard the exact same dire apocalyptic warnings as Windows XP EOL approached but to my knowledge nothing terribly bad ever happened after support ended as far as security vulnerabilities were concerned. I mistakenly thought that the WannaCry ransomeware attack that hit a couple years ago was a good example of what can happen when you continue to use an outdated OS but as it turns out it couldn't be executed automatically (only manually) on XP puters while many Windows 7 PCs were infected so in some ways XP was actually "safer" than 7 was...at least when the outbreak first occurred.

So count me in as one of those who are digging their heels in and who will be using Windows 7 until practically nothing runs on it any longer. In the meantime I've recently started playing around a little with different versions of Linux Mint and so far I'm liking what I'm seeing. I tried Mint several years ago only very briefly but quickly lost interest once I had my new Windows 7 rig up and running but it seems they have made some very nice improvements since then so when it's finally time to retire 7 for good I'll hopefully be proficient enough to pretty much kiss MS adios forever. I just cloned my main drive to a spare new SSD I bought a couple years ago and will continue to periodically make clones and/or images for backups just in case but quite honestly from what I've seen I'm not sure I still wouldn't prefer using an infected Windows 7 to that newer POS OS Microsoft is trying to force down everybody's throat.
