What should we do after January 2020

I do remote support for an IT company. Today I remoted in to a client who needed an admin to do something they are not allowed to do on their own. They were running W10. As soon as I logged in with admin credentials I was informed that I had to wait for updates to run. I had no choice in the matter so we both just sat there twiddling our thumbs while it ran. Assuming this client does not have another issue, I will probably never remote in to their machine again. But it is so good to know that my patches will be up to date through 2019-12-17 if I do...

For the record that's one of my biggest beefs with it but there are others which I have posted before. It seems like I have to reboot my work laptop every couple of weeks for an update.

Luckily, option 7 in the tutorial below works great to disable automatic updates in Windows 10 so you can manually check for and install the ones you want when you have time.

SIW2 if you are still willing I would very much like to obtain the UpdatePack7R2-17.5.15 you guys mentioned earlier. I have been using Simplixes UpdatePack7R2 for some time now and unfortunately have been deleting older packs as new ones came so don't have the May 2017. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help. I don't know which torrent client(?) to use that is non-intrusive and free of viruses. So using a magnet is beyond me. I don't even recognize where the link is in the post you referred me too if that tells you anything about my skill level concerning such things.


Heck, I have been trying to set up a virtual machine for several years but always get bogged down and give up. I need to focus better and just figure this stuff out instead of avoiding it.

Personally, I will use Win 7 till the wheels fall off. I use Office 2010 also. I don't mind at all paying MS for it's software but Windows 10 is not something I want until later. (I held onto XP till my kids started laughing at me and decided to upgrade to 7). I wish MS would make a Win 10 "Enthusiast" that wouldn't update or spy. Percentage -wise I think the market would be small enough that they could satisfy many of us here without denting their bottom line.


It seems most people don't really care about their OS till it throws a fit so wouldn't be affected by a Win 7 or Win 10 Enthusiast type OS.


The way it works now MS has an almost unlimited R&D with the talented people all over the world working to make Win 10 digestible and some day MS will be to the point that they will have a bullet-proof system as far as customization where you will just have to take or leave it because it will be so difficult to manipulate, plinkers like me will just submit. Oh well. Windows 7 Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I am ever in a position where I have my personal machine on W10 I will definitely be putting that to good use. The problem at work is that our clients are usually stuck with a corporate policy preventing them from doing that on their own. Even my own company requires that we follow a pretty strict (and very limited) policy when it comes to changing setting like that. We have a lot of government contracts which require some pretty stringent limits and we end up being stuck, too.

I do have a new build thread running elsewhere. If it comes down to W10 being my only realistic choice you can bet I will be hitting the tutorials here.

I was pretty active here some years back. It is ironic, but the more time I spend doing this professionally the less it seems I am in touch with the hobbyist side of things. I used to be the one doing the "new build" recommending, not the student.

SIW2, Yes I did read your post and did use the link you provided to download the zip file. Thank You. Sorry for my murky response earlier. The link I didn't recognize was the reference to a "magnet" link. As I stated, my knowledge of torrents and their appetites is less than thorough.


I have read in another thread that MS will no longer allow Windows 7 to be activated after January. Is this true or just a guess? Reason I ask is I bought a new MB for my wife to upgrade her Windows 7 rig and will now have to have the OS activated soon if I am to use the new hardware. So I guess I will be building again as much as I wanted to avoid it. MSI-B450M-Pro2 for her.

I just checked a few (reputable) places and it looks like activation will still be allowed. I wouldn't bet my life on it though. And even if MS says it is OK now there is nothing stopping them from changing their mind a month from now.

Im 99% sure MS will NOT stop activation checks, because of the extended support for Business use.
As any of them using a volume MAK product keys will still have to validate against the MS servers

biggest clue will be if MS pulls KB971033

Given that it only works on the original PC, why would the Tokens Manager be better than a macrium image of the install?

Because you can do a repair/clean install and then restore the activation.

My plan is to set up my basic install with the updates and all of my necessary applications, then create an image. Since I keep my data on a separate partition, a 'clean install' would consist of restoring that image. I usually do progressive images as I install, so I'll likely keep a few more just to have various stages at the ready.



That said, I like to cover all my bases, so good to know and employ this method also. Do you prefer the DISM++ backup function to the Advanced Token Manager?

Well I bit the bullet, used the excellent Tutorial and download to set up Windows 10, which activated. I had created an image with Macrium Reflect and backed up to my NAS, with all my data, music, pics, videos and docs on a 2TB spinner that I intend to use as storage, with everything else on the 480GB Sandisk SSD. I didn't need the data on the spinner: the tutorial download picked up all my files from 7. The problems I had were few, including changing to Firefox instead of Edge. The worst problem was trying to convince 10 to let my printer print from web pages and Emails, but I got there in the end. This desktop is Cat 6 Ethernet connected across my bungalow loft, two rooms and a hall away from the router. The wife's Win 7 laptop is wireless, as are both Sony Xperia phones and the Lenovo tablet. That setup appeared to be the problem, so I removed desktop, laptop, phones and tablet from the network, uninstalled printer from all devices and disconnected power to it. Then reconnected the Canon TS 6159 printer power and installed printer drivers to the desktop first. Then installed drivers to all other devices, but set the wireless devices up as DirectPrint, to the router via Wireless. The experience of doing all this will help me to install 10 to the wife's laptop, which will go hopefully without problems, which believe me are to be avoided!


Thank you very much Brink, for an excellent Tutorial. I was feeling a bit anxious about the switch, but realise it's nothing to worry about. Up to now, I am finding 10 to be OK. If I can do this at 74, it should not be a big problem for younger people!
