This really, really depends on what you classify as 'best'.

MSE could be classified as the best because of its great integration, small foot print and relatively high virus recognition rate. (I use this on all my PCs bar my primary one.)

McAfee could be classified as the best because of its customisability, high virus recognition rate and interface. (I use this on my primary PC only)

If you are like me and download Gigabytes of stuff everyday, some trust worthy, some not so trust worthy stuff then virus recognition rate and firewall configurability are the two most important things in my opinion.

If you are a standard web user who checks their email, browses the internet and downloads the odd program then a small footprint would probably be the order of the day, opposed to virus recognition rate.

There is no hard, fast "best". What works for me may not be the best for you.

A layered approach is best beginning with a router and its hardware firewall. A hardware firewall is better than any software firewall.

Next you can add a software firewall; but it is not necessary. I do have a software firewall in order to monitor outgoing connections.

In addition, you should use a good anti-virus program and a good anti-malware program.

The biggest security factor is your own surfing habits. Don't visit questionable sites, don't download from anything but trusted sites, don't click on any links on the web or in an email unless you are positive the link can be trusted.

Kaspersky Internet Security is notorious for having an extremely low Virus detection rate, something Niemiro (Vista Guru over on VF) will pay testament to.

For casual internet browsing however it should be more than adequate.

Personally I prefer McAfee as my Antivirus on a PC that I have to maintain myself, because of its customisability as well as the things I outlined in my previous post.

However on shared PCs and ones I don't use particularly frequently (such as my old backup laptop that used to host my website) I have MSE installed because it's free, easy to use and is very difficult of other users of the PC to break.

Nothing can be traced as the best ... every program has its own ups and downs. The most important thing is what do you want from it . It may be designed as it captures every suspects ... and thus kills some good non malicious programs ; or otherwise it may behave liberally ... but through that gap a malicious thing may come out.

I think the two polar cases are the same bad ... It should properly discriminate between malicious and non-malicious files. There are two AV programs that satisfied me ESET NOD 32 and AVAST.

Well, It depends on what u use, if u download a lot of stuff, u might need a strong detection level, If u r not very much worried about viruses then any freeware will do, I have been using Avira since i got my first laptop, and even before that my parents used Avira, I use the freeware version and its the best for my needs. Give it a try if u dont mind

This is based completely on two sources:

The attached chart.

Niemiro's hours of complaints about how few viruses were detected when he switched from McAfee to Kaspersky last year.
This is completely unscientific but since he switched to Kaspersky I think he's had at least one possibly two major attacks, whereas when he had McAfee he had no major attacks.

It's what works for you. if you like it and it is causing you no problems with your system, use it. Opinions on the "best" program are subjective and a matter of individual opinion. There are many threads here on the "best" anti-virus, the "best anti-malware", and the "best" firewall programs. What is best is mostly personal opinion.

Point taken, we shall have to agree to disagree.

What I think we can all agree is that it doesn't particularly matter which antivirus program you have as long as you've got one installed. They're all pretty good; none of them are perfect and some are more suited for some tasks than others but for a few megabytes of code they do remarkably well.
