"What U Hear" Recording - Enable

How to Enable What U Hear Recording​

For those of you who want to record what you are hearing over your speakers/headset.

You will need to un-hide and enable recording options. If you are using a Creative Sound Blaster sound card this option will be called "What U Hear" if you are using another audio device such as Realtek on-board or generic sound devices this option will be called "Stereo Mix".

For the tutorial I am going to show how to un-hide and enable the "What U Hear" option. The same steps may be followed for the "Stereo Mix" option also.



Here's How:

1. First open your audio options. "Start/Control Panel/Sound"

2. Now go to the "Recording" tab.

3. You will need to right click and check the following options:


4. Now that the hidden options are visible, right click on each of them and click on enable.

5. Right click on the What U Hear option (Stereo Mix for non Sound Blaster devices) and click on Set as default device.


6. Once the device is set as default you will be able to use the "What U Hear"/"Stereo Mix" option in your applications to record the audio you are currently hearing over your speakers/headset.
If you wish to record from the mic or use it in a game you can come back to this tab in the audio options and right click the mic and set it as default again.

I am sure there is probably a way to use both the "What U Hear"/"Stereo Mix" while still using the mic but I have not gotten that far since I only need to record audio once in a while. So I generally just leave the mic default until I am ready to record audio then I switch for that operation.

I hope this helps all of those who have had issues recording audio being played back over the speakers/headset.

If nothing else shows then your audio device may not support it or may not have properly working drivers installed.

Once you choose to show disabled devices anything your audio hardware has should appear in the list. If it does not then I would start looking for a reason why features are not being recognized.

My computer e-machine T5234 does not have a sound card. . So no "What U hear" in Start/Control Panel/Sound/Recording.
It seems this method does not work for me

Did you have Stereo Mix instead? If not, then your sound chip does not support this option.

I've got the XiFi Titanium and I can't this to work in W7 either. Works fine in Vista. If it matters, I'm running x64.
I do have the most recent driver versions but it is possible that we'll see updated drivers as we get closer to W7 release.

I'm not familiar with the Titanium cards is that the PCIe version? I think the Titanium line of cards is a bit different from the previous models as far as software and drivers. I know I have heard a lot of people are having issues using them in the RC.

Yep, it's the PCIe version. I totally reinstalled all Creaative driversand managed to get thinks working again.

funny, I have a sound blaster card and i see setero mix after this not what you hear

in xp it was what you hear

stereo mix works fine for me i just have that paranoid when something is odd kida mind haha

It looks this ability has been removed from the RC and RTM. Anyone know how to restore the Stereo Mix as a disabled device?

This feature is still in Windows 7. It is dependant on what you audio card/chip and driver supports though.

(excuse my english, i usually speak french...) This solution did not work for me at first time. Then I found that the driver of my audio integrated card (ASUS ALC1200) was from Microsoft. I then looked to found the real driver for my integrated card (who was name before "High definition audio" and found the driver on the Web. Only after installing the good driver (after three times...), the Stereo Mix appeared (the name appear as Realtek High definition audio now). But I've still had to tried some input options in Audacity to get it works. But now it works great.

I constantly get the Language Configurator window and that is after I ran all the tests of speaking and passed them with more than 99% accuracy. I chose English-US and also tried English-British and the language configurator still comes up.It gives also no Help, just a stupid OK.

Do you know, if anyone had figure out how to use: both the "What U Hear"/"Stereo Mix" while still using the mic. on Windows seven, 32 bit system.
