What stands in the way of 64-bit Flash's return, and not just for Linux? Nguyen says it's not the core of the engine, but rather the supporting software:

The issue that comes to mind when going from 32-bit to 64-bit--the actual size of memory addresses--was addressed by our engineers some time ago. The main issue has been libraries. Flash Player relies on many code libraries for functionality like audio and video playback or hardware acceleration. If a library that Flash Player depends on isn't available in 64-bit, we need to rewrite code for new libraries. Flash Player is used to create powerful, beautiful apps and content, but it can also play back a wide array of media, from video clips back to Flash Player 6 to, say, the latest and greatest H.264 HD video streaming live with hardware acceleration. To do so natively in 64-bit, all of the many library dependencies must be available or rewritten for 64-bit. For example, on Mac OS X, we rewrote code that used the older Carbon libraries, which were 32-bit only, to instead use modern Cocoa libraries. Except for compatibility code we include for non-Cocoa browsers, Flash Player 10.1 is now fully rewritten for Cocoa, setting the stage for a 64-bit Flash Player.

We expect 64-bit to be in wide use," Nguyen said, "and Flash Player will take advantage of native 64-bit."

To me, it seems that Adobe's 'high priority' is to sit back and wait until 64 bit library code is common-place as the work has already been done by others and not themselves. Then they'll step up to the plate.

Right after they fix all their stability and security issues, right?

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for a 64-bit version of Flash. 64-bit computing has been in the mainstream since the release of Vista in 2007 (and, to a lesser extent, a few years prior with the release of XP 64-bit although this wasn't as easy to come by). As such, they have had at least 5 years to develop it.

The issues of stability and security can be addressed quite simply. Stability can only be addressed by having Beta versions available so that any bugs can be found out and dealt with, remembering that some bugs may only manifest themselves on specific hardware configurations. Again with security. There is no such thing as a 100% secure program, for there are always unscrupulous people who will disect such programs to look for any errors in the code that they can use to hook in malware. Of course, programs are made to be as secure as possible, but the absolute security of a program can never be guaranteed as malware is constantly developing. This is partially due to the complexity of modern programs which are comprised of many lines of code, in some cases well over a million, and in these cases it is unfortunate but inevitable that bugs remain causing security and other issues.

adobe do not have a plan, project, budget, schedule or clue when it comes to the x64 flash. all they will say is that they remain committed to producing an x64 version for windows at some nebulous future date, this has not changed since the cancellation of the linux x64 version project. adobe has remained silent on the adobe forum at adobe....

Why would Adobe bother to waste time on Flash when there is no money in it for them, they would rather have their Development team working on photoshop etc that they can charge exorbitant prices for.

Adobe's products on Windows have always been fair at best (I won’t go into the billions of issues with their software as many of you already know so well). Adobe started on Mac and loves Mac ONLY. They wish the world would have gone Mac only. They still cannot get over it.

I don't see a x64 version anytime soon and that is great. I am tired of having to security patch/update Flash and Adobe Reader all the time. Since HTML5 is built-in to IE9 and does not require Flash for video I hope this is the end of Flash. JMHO.

I'm wondering what the point is anyway, because of the lack of other reasons to use an x64 browser. What would that benefit in terms of browsing the web? It would be much more important to work on the security and stability issues in the x86 Flash instead.
