Whats slowing up my startup? Event Viewer shows lots of problems!

PBCopter: The Asus site marked the latest driver as beta - I don't recommend beta software or drivers to other members so I suggested the previous version. Some members can manage a beta, others can't - so I eliminate that as a possible snag to finding a resolution.

It is not a beta driver on the Intel site that I recommended in Post #45 but I think it is moot at this point.

Back again.


Maybe I will leave TFC for another day, I just twigged that TFC Probably stands for Temporary File Cleaner?

As said doing this caused serious problems a while ago so I will try to find out what file it was and what program used it and make sure I have a copy before cleaning Temp folders.

I have uninstalled all the Apple programs mentioned and disabled references to them in the Startup list in case they try to come back again.
A few days ago my startup time was 4 minutes 21 seconds, with your excellent help, advice and patience
it is now 50 seconds, I think that's about an 80% improvement .

I can't help wondering if I have missed something so will read through and see if anything comes to light.

Fair enough Alan (Old Timer-TFC)- it's your machine.. I give no dictates unless I know that it needs to be done - everything is a recommended course of action. I've run TFC times - not a regular requirement, but it does a nice job of cleaning out the dust weevils in all of the nooks and crannies of Windows.

As an alternative, you could run cCleaner (already offered) or the std Windows Disk Cleanup on the property page of the partition (drive). Again, it is a recommended best practices - you might just want to enjoy the new startup time for a while before diving into another round.

Hey, you're getting pretty good at this acronym stuff.

Before I forget, check your Startup tab in msconfig. The only thing that really should be there is Bitdefender AV, but even that is questionable. AV pgms do two things at startup - a quick survey and self protect. Both are important protection mechanisms, so the trick is to find the setting in the application that allows those operations, but does not allow overkill at startup (product news, virus definitions, transaction protect when you're not yet connected, etc.). The other Bitdefender stuff [wallet, etc.] can wait to load after the normal system services. Unfortunately I don't know enough about BD and can't seem to find the official settings information.

A quick google search returned: BitDefender - Never load BitDefender interface at start-up for information on the Bitdefender startup settings. Changing the msconfig might be fruitless if BD keeps putting it back

I have Bitdefender Total Security 2014 on a cheap renew deal. I have looked through all the options I can find and there does not seem to be an option 'not to load Bitdefender at startup'

I will remove it from startup and see if it returns by itself

Sorry Bill, you will have to put your big hammer back in the toy box. Bitdefender has not re-appeared in the startup list since I unchecked the box, it is checked under Services though.

I will print out the tut on CCleaner, it does a lot more than I realised, thanks for the link.

Cool, that's good news (but now I have to take off my Thor costume too).

I think BD in Services is fine, it was the other ancillary BD startup items (wallet...) that don't need to be first and foremost.

re cCleaner: The most useful part of this is cleaning up files. I gave you a list of things to include when you run it. The Prefetch cleanup might give you some startup improvement as there were performance optimization events. Windows defrag works with Prefetch to organize programs for faster access - so if I didn't recommend defrag (I think I did) - add defrag to your task list.

Hi Bill.

I looked through my old emails and various posts, I am sure that the file that was deleted was flash.ocx which was needed to run an old copy of Paint Shop Pro and/or Paint Shop Photo Album. I have found the file on my system so will make sure I keep a copy before I hit the cCleaner clean button. I do keep my drives defragged when needed so that won't be a problem.

Ok, good idea to save flash.ocx (probably applies to Album-not sure)

If C: is an SSD - forget Defrag... if any drive is an SSD forget defrag on that drive.

As I mentioned Defrag helps Prefetch so the two step process is cCleaner (include Old Prefetch in the list to clean) and then Defrag C:\ (other drives really don't come into play with regards to this exercise) - run Defrag a number of times (30-60 seconds between) until you get down to 4 passes
