What's that Version....?

What's the "version" of Windows 7 on Netbooks, like, is it the "integrated" version or what...?

Because on my old laptop, I may put a "lighter" version of Windows 7 on it, as when running allot of my CAD apps (AutoCAD Inventor 2011 and AutoCAD 3DS Max Mostly) my laptop REALLY freezes up.

I've really already done every optimization possible to my laptop.

I remember a post somewhere in the past, where a Windows 7. version made specifically for those Atom notebooks was made. I don't really care about a nice look, I'm on classic mode already

Should I even bother to put Starter onto my laptop, the MS website really doesn't list the EXACT things that are pulled out of starter edition.

What do you have on it now? Actually starter is OEM only Home Basic is retail though.

I'd get Home Premium and turn off Aero Glass. You'll pretty much have the performance hit problem licked. It's the extra graphics load that causes the most problems with Netbooks, mainly due to them being underpowered in the video department. Eliminate unnecessary Services and Programs and you'll take an additional load off the CPU and RAM.

The next generation of Netbooks will have better graphics and (mostly) dual-core CPUs and won't need nearly as much babying.

Exactly the reason why I think a Netbook/Laptop might not be the best of all choices for Autocad and the likes..low RAM and mediocre GFX just doesn't mix with graphic centered applications (not even mentioning the relative tiny screens

It's an HP Mini 110-1125NR, it is more than a year old and it runs Windows 7 with Aero enabled with no problem and with blazing fast speed.

I have the same netbook. I have Professional on it, and wouldn't exactly call it "blazing fast", but it's very much usable for general use.

I took Starter straight off of the netbook. Quite a lot is stripped out, including small things like personalisation. But like mentioned previously, having Aero enabled is the real battery drainer, which is what Starter tries to combat.

Erm... yikes! But currently on my laptop I've got Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

So... yea. Should I just re-format, and make it SUPER minimal, as in.. .remove everything/anything that can be eating my delicious memory?

AutoCAD is a really intense program. At my school, when we use the AutoCAD suite of softwares, we run ATI/AMD FirePro cards, with 8 GB of ram, and I think some sort of Quad core processors...

But really, anything to cut-down and make my laptop faster would help.

Here are some tips I found, they both worked for my netbook:

Disable search indexing:

* Right Click the “Computer” Icon in the desktop and select “Manage”.
* Click “Services and Applications” in the “Computer Management” window.
* Click on “Services”.
* You can see a lot of services listed there. Look for “Windows Search” in that.disable search indexing in Windows 7 Speed Up Windows 7 Ultimate Guide To Make Windows 7 Blazing Fast!!!
* Right Click on “Windows Search” from the list and choose “Properties”.
* The “Windows Search Properties Window” will open up. From “Startup type” click on the drop down menu and choose “Disabled”.
* Click “Apply” then “OK” and that’s it. The Windows 7 Search Indexing Feature is now disabled.

Most of the Windows 7 users do less searches in there system. The Search Indexing service in Windows 7 will index keeps track of the files so that they can be found quickly when asked at some other time. This feature is useful only if you perform frequent searches on your system.
For occasional file searchers the Search Indexing service in Windows 7 is a total resource hog. It unknowingly eats up your system resources. What you need from windows 7 is maximum performance from it then i would certainly recommend you to disable this resource hogging Windows 7 Search Indexing Feature.

Change the Power Plan To Maximum Performance

* Double click the ” Power Options ” in the Control panel.
* Click the down arrow showing ”Show Additional Plans” to see the
”High Performance” power plan

* Now just activate the ” High Performance ” plan and that’s it.
* You may go for the advanced settings for further tweaking if you want.

The Power settings in Windows 7 is not automatically set for maximum performance.
By default the power plan in Windows 7 is set for a balanced performance with energy consumption on hardware. So you may not get the optimal performance from windows 7 if this is the case. So we need to change the power plan to High Performance Mode.
