What's the next generation install media?

I think SSD's cards it's a better choice if they aren't so expensive. Thumb drivers are a better choice because of the price.

This is a good one, imagine Windows 7 on this driver.

I had a thumb drive similar to that design, and I have to say - they suck. Very fragile, fit loosely into the USB slot, and easy to lose. Mine ended up cracked in the center within a few months.

Like you say, you have a similar so it is not this one. ;)
And this drive has a good design and it is very beautiful.
Anyway if W7 come in a driver like this, you go let the drive quite and security, no risk to loose or broke if you keep the driver safe.

Bye bye. :geek:

Everyone saying that optical media will stick around without some form of second media well your leaving out a large market that has just come about and that's netbooks or mini laptops without any optical drives. MS will have to use SD or USB for Win 7 to reach this fast growing market. I use a Mini HP as my main computer and I get told I have a sexy laptop or cool laptop always with the "where did you get it?" or How much was it? I think ATT is selling this same netbook with 3G installed netbooks are here and here to stay and we need OS's too and with SD and USB it just makes sense win 7 will come on one or the other cause they know if they don't someone else will and they would be smart to be the first major OS to adopt this growing market and a media that with MS new file system will make TB SD cards on our christmas list 2010.

This is what I was thinking when starting this thread. These computers are being shipped without DVD drives. There will come a day when all these people will have to do installs or repairs or whatever. You would think MS would offer something else as an option....which another post in this thread indicates they will offer flash drives as install media. Pretty cool. I would get one if I had the choice.

Not really. You're forgetting that most netbooks are used with the pre-insalled O/S. On top of that, you can always attach a portable USB optical drive to install on those since they can boot to USB.

Eventually something will replace optical drives, but the current market isn't driving it no matter how much some people want things to be on flash thumbdrives, etc. I'd like to see it too, but I know it's not going to happen for a long time.

Then how does M$ plan to help those with netbooks since they have stated that windows 7 will be compatible with the new smaller laptops. mine came with XP and sorry not paying 50-100 dollars for a USB optical drive just to install an OS when a thumb drive is so much cheaper and easier. It wouldn 't make any sense to tell people they are making 7 work on netbooks if they didn't plan on a way to get it on them.

MS specs for netbooks why do this if they didn't plan on getting this OS to this market?

Microsoft publishes maximum Windows 7 netbooks specs

MS specs for netbooks why do this if they didn't plan on getting this OS to this market?

Then you'll be out of luck. :p

As for your link, that's OEM, not customer installed.

Microsoft isn't interesting in getting existing netbook owners over to Windows 7. Microsoft has bigger plans and its outlook is much farther into the future than you or I would care to look. It wants Windows 7 to be the new Netbook O/S standard that will be on all of the new models coming out. Face it, if you have a netbook, your model is most likely already outdated (unless you purchased the new generation ones recently).

I have a netbook too: an Asus Eee PC 701 series (4G model). It works great with my custom XP install (and dual boots Linux), but I have no plans to put Windows 7 on it as that would surely eat up my storage space). If you have a newer netbook using an Atom processor and 16+GB of storage space, Windows 7 is an option for you, but you'd need to get it over to a USB thumbdrive yourself or borrow someone's USB-based DVD drive. Because I can tell now with 100% certainty that Windows 7 will not be released on flash media by Microsoft directly. Other companies may repackage it on flash memory for you, though, at a price on top of the cost of Windows 7.

The most common Windows 7 distro methods? Download to burn an ISO or move to USB yourself, DVD, and OEM pre-install. Nothing will change, yet

I am trying to find out how they will give us the 64 bit option. That complicates the subject even more. I am hearing the upgrade and retail packs may include 2 disks. I know the next generation will be 64 bit only but this time they are going to have to put 2 disks in each retail pack. (or one 8GB flash drive) I have also heard about dual layer DVDs.

I have also heard about dual layer DVDs.

They wouldn't release it on Dual-layer DVDs since not everyone has a d DVD player capable of reading dual-layer DVDs. But they might create a DVD that is burned on both sides, much like some burned on both sides for wide-screen and full-screen movie DVDs.

But I'm pretty sure Microsoft will release it much like they released Vista.

If they do it like Vista....it will be 32 bit unless you specify you would like 64 ? ? ?

Isn't that how they did it? I hope they don't do that.

Edit: I called Microsoft Sales and Licensing. They told me every RETAIL disk will include 32 and 64 bit. There will be an option at install to choose between the two. I tried to get the lady I spoke with to tell me how they are going to do this.....she didn't seem to know. She just said it will be an option at install.

I was talking about the media, not the 32-bit/64-bit offering. Windows 7 will come in both. But by Vista-like release, I mean on regular DVDs. Either there will be one that has both versions on it, or two with one for 32-bit and two for 64-bit. In other words, my guess is that they won't use dual-layer DVDs, nor would they use double-sided DVDs.

Does the upcoming release of USB 3.0 have any consideration in this discussion?

NEC Announces World's First USB 3.0 Host Controller!

It would certainly make installing from a USB more feasible, though not necessarily more cost friendly for production. Since the main factor here is apparently production cost and not convenience to the end user, I guess not?

Remember, USB is a connection type, where as optical discs and flash modules are media types. An optical drive and a flash drive can both connect via USB.

Lol, consider yourself lucky. I think my SSDs are encrypted with Romulan stealth technology. The microscopic workings of SSDs still confound me, let alone the "automated" installer. They should call it the Windows "magical" installation kit for truth-in-advertising. ;)

Remember, USB is a connection type, where as optical discs and flash modules are media types. An optical drive and a flash drive can both connect via USB.

True, but flash media is faster. This will be a player in the next install media is my bet. I would sure like to try it.

I guess we'll have to get new mobos to use this??? Maybe a PCI card??

Not on a USB controller.

I am using it now. Faster, and easier to write out the files instead of burning discs and coasters. I do not forsee widespread implementation until cost per unit approximates plastic.

I guess we'll have to get new mobos to use this???
I am eagerly looking forward to integrated USB3 mobos so I can upgrade my ancient P5B Deluxe ;-)

Maybe a PCI card??
Yes, or even yesser.

Actually Microsoft are in talks about a merger with Cybus Industry so we will all be getting one of these
