When computer goes to sleep graphics card overheats

After installing Windows 7 HP 32Bit, I have had problems with my NVIDIA 7800 GS - AGP card going from 42C to 69C while asleep. I have basically turned all my profiles so that none of them turns anything off. I am using EVGA Precision to monitor it. As soon as I hit a key to wake it up it shows fan speed at 100% and GPU Temp around 69C (Normal operating temp is 40C to 42C) and then the temp starts rapidly returning to normal.

Any ideas why this is happening.

Best Regards

Mark

Its probably just the program thats off and it receives the correct temp after resuming, Does the card feel warm to the touch after being asleep for extended time?

When I sleep (This is with a laptop though) nothing is happening, no sound, no activity, nothing.
Everything boots up again just like cold booting, maybe it just gets hot while booting up.
Like Urbwolf said, the sensors or the program might be giving false readings.

EDIT: Mods, move this to the Graphics section. ;)

If it happens while turned off. There is nothing to worry about. As the previous poster mentioned, it can be happening after resuming.

Thanks for all your replies. Now I get to prove these theories by opening the case and testing the card's actual temp. It will be difficult because the case is pretty tight.

I went into NVIDIA performance and set up a 100% fan speed routine for the video card and Nvidia, Everest and EVGA Precision all report the temp at 69C and fan speed 100%. I'm thinking that if the fan does go off then the card would actually fry with no cooling which leads me to thinking that you are correct in saying that the temps are false at wakeup.

They may be true at wakeup, but as I said it could be overheating when they boot up again.
Please tell us, do the temperatures stay high after sleeping?

Yeah the temps on chips can rise in a fraction of a second. So the time that the unit goes through coming out of sleep before windows even fully wakes could be causing the GPU to heat up raidly. Then the driver FINALLY wakes up and turns the fan on. Sounds like an issue with the design of the MB or graphics section however. On boot, all fans should come on , then get turned down by drivers as necessary.

Maybe a setting for it in the bios?

This doesn't add up for me. The settings for power are all set to never sleep except for the screen. When I wake the screen up the temp of the VC is 69c GPU fan speed is 100%. Then the temp reduces to the normal 41C. I have set up a manual setting for the VC to never sleep in Nvidia control panel. I am going to try the program insomnia to see if I can prevent the computer from sleeping. I never had this issue in Windows XP. Maybe this is something that the Nvidia and Microsoft experts could shed some light on.

I have discovered a way to stop this anomaly from occurring. Set the monitor to never sleep. It seems when you set the monitor to sleep then my problem reoccurs.

Can anyone explain this?

Probably a bug. Wither in the windows power management or in the video driver. It shuts the fan down when it's not supposed to, as if it's assuming the computer itself is sleeping but then the video section is being left powered (because it's not) with the fan off...

Try an updated video driver if possible?

I installed new driver the latest from NVIDIA 196.21 and set screeen to shut down after 1 minute waited 30 seconds and touched the mouse the temperature had already increased by 6C to 46C. I think this is a bug in Windows or NVIDIA and very significant. I guess the next step wonuld be to find a way to contact them. A daunting task I might guess. Are there any MS or NVIDIA tech's monitoring this forum?

Actually contacting the laptop manufacturer with the problem might be the most likely way to get the information across.

If the manufacturer cares at all about their product or customers (a stretch I know), then THEY will have the clout to ask for a bug fix from their vendors (MS/Nvidia). But I would start there anyway...

That wold be the "good citizen" thing to do but sadly I would not expect a fix soon or ever. But you can feel good that you tried to help :)

This actually happens to me too. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 on a laptop though.

The graphics processor is a built in intel. When I leave it (to download or shower or whatever) and it goes to sleep, the fan goes off and the whole computer actually feels hotter than usual. The only way to "fix" it is by restarting.

So I can probably say that it's NOT the graphics card, or if it is, then it's something shared with this intel card that I'm using.

PS. I found another bug related to sleep mode, and that is if it goes to sleep mode, all the widgets and Windows Explorer get bugged out visually. Turning off gadgets and turning it on again and restarting explorer (through task manager) fixes the bug but it's extremely annoying.
