where shall I put my personal documents ?

Hi,

At my work place, computers have been upgraded to windows 7 and I'm beginner with this system and I'm trying to find the best practice for my personal documents.

So far, like on my old own PCs, I used to partition the disk into a C:/system partition for windows and a D:/data partition for my own documents to keep my things safe in case of problems that need a reinstallation of window on C:.

The problem with that is that it seems everybody that would open a session on my PC with their own account could possibly access this D:/ folders.

So I tried to put my documenst into the "My document" folder but still, they seems accessible (at least for an administrator).

How shall I do to keep my own documents only visible by me?

Keep them on a flash drive then no one but you can access them! If you do not have admin rights to the network, there is nowhere where you can store data without the Admin having access! have you spoken to the network admin about this problem?

i also have admin right on this PC (not "directly" from my account but was given an admin account (PC only, not network) to be able to install softwares I need).

I can admit administrators can have access to everything, but not regular users.

If this is a work PC, then there should be an option for a "home" directory, which is usually stored out on a server. If not, and you are worried about others sitting and using your computer (even if it is against company policy) then keep them in your Users directory, and configure your libraries as you want. This way, they will be protected. I keep my docs on D for all of my computers, even my work one, because I know I'm the only one with access to my computer. Things I may need to work on remotely, I store on my own server space that I have access to.

Have you thought of using something like Truecrypt. I use a small container for all my personal documents and since I do not have much regular stuff to put in it I just back-up the container fairly regularly. I am the sole user but if I had to share then I might be tempted to make a small partition rather than a container for Truecrypt and then hide it in Disk Management so it was not seen by other users. It is not entirely safe but it will not appear to other users in normal use. It will be available for Truecrypt. The data could perhaps be backed-up to a container on a flash drive whilst both are open. Depends I suppose how secure you want your personal information to be. I keep all my passwords and reg keys for software in there as well as correspondence etc.
