Solved Where Should the Active go?

I have several Windows 7 systems (all Pro, 64-bit) and I was doing some checking and I saw something that I am not sure of.

All the systems have 1 hard drive or SSD drive. I go to Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative Tools->Computer Management, then I click on Disk Management. I see that the single drive is divided which one is the main portion of the drive with data and the other is the System Reserve.

What I am seeing is that some of the systems have the "Active" on the main part of the drive and some of the others have "Active" in the System Reserve. Should the "Active" be in the System Reserve or the main part of the drive?

Hello mate.


Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire Windows disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple answer.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

Yes, here are the shots

Capture pic is the one where most of all my systems look alike. you can see in the main section it has "Active"

To theog, looks like you are helping me in two of my threads. Is your response a question or that is the answer, "Active" should be in System Reserve

Okay, I closed the other thread and I apologize. Let's work on the first issue, the "active" question I have. So basically I have a total of 9 computers. 8 computers show what Capture pic shows. Active is on the main drive, not in the System Reserve.

1 computer has the "Active" in the System Reserve section, not in the main drive which is depicted on pic called Capture 1

Where should the "Active" be located at?

The SysResv should be "System Active" with no drive letter if there are no other bootable OSs on other HDDs on the same machine.


On machines with multiple OSs on separate HDDs each should be Active but there will be only a single Windows System partition.

In my situation, all 9 computers have only one operating system which is Windows 7 Pro. So just to make sure, I need to make the System Reserve "Active"?

If there is not another bootable OS on Disk 1, it would be best to remove the drive letter from the "System Reserved" and to mark the SysResv as Active and run the 3 separate startup repairs to (re)create the Windows System boot files to the SysResv partition.

Okay, got it and again, sorry for the confusion. For my next question, the 9 computers. One computer does have a section for the system reserve, but there is nothing in there. How do I make that section contain the files for a system reserve?

Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times
​

First you have to create a Primary partition named "System Reserved" with no drive letter, then run the 3 separate startup repairs to (re)create the Windows System boot files the new SysResv partition.

Just for arguments sake, why do you insist on making sysres out of that unallocated space? That computer already boots peacefully from the windows partition. Unless you need bitlocker you can just use partition wizard to pull the C: drive 101 mb to the left and live happily ever after. Actually if you're lazy and dont mind losing that 101 mb, just sit tight and do nothing.

I cannot remember when, but someone here in the forums, a while ago, said that you need the system reserve and was pretty animate about it. The reasoning sounded sound. I hear what you are both saying though. It does boot fine and I have no issues. I came here to find out which direction to go, if I should create it or like both of you said, leave it.

In the future, is there something I did wrong during the install of Windows 7 to prevent this? I mean, I do not remember during the install asking me if I want a system reserve and if you want to make system reserve your Active? Maybe it's something else I did (or my helping buddy) after the install.
