This has been debated and there is no objective answer, only subjective opinions about different anti virus vendors.

I take that back Microsoft Security Essentials is known to have the least issues along with the anti virus that is least likely to cause a BSOD

+1
It's all a matter of personal preference and what you need for your system to work best. I really like MSE. It works very well, it is very stable, has very few if any problems at all and Microsoft designed MSE to work with my OS. Best of all it is absolutely free, it will never expire, and it does not require any registration.

If your going with the free option I would go with Avast! or if you prefer the paid option I would say Bitdefender 2013. With the paid option, Bitdefender is running a deal for a lifetime license (5 years) for only $75 U.S., you can't beat a deal like that these days!

BTW - Bitdefender is calling their deal a "lifetime" license because they say the average lifespan of a pc these days is not more than 5 years.
