During my 68 years, with service in the UK Merchant Fleet and 12 years in the army, I saw a lot of the world. I have toured quite a bit since then, visiting British Columbia (awesome, is a very poor word to describe that visit!) and most of Europe. I loved Bayern, thought Muenchen the coolest city on the planet. I have seen just so much of the world and the one conclusion I reached was that people are the same all over the world: all that most want is a life for themselves and their families, free of fear, hunger and oppression.
But now that I have medical problems which mostly limit me to the UK, I have begun to realise what a truly beautiful country is Britain. Great contrasts of scenery, people, weather and dialects can be found by simply traveling a few tens of miles. Go further and find mountains, lakes, flat country and everywhere is green in season. I would not wish to live anywhere but my own lovely East Lindsey, Lincolnshire. A few miles away is a coast with many miles of beaches, many almost deserted. The Lincolnshire Wolds have small, deep valleys, tiny villages, forest and farmland. Lincoln city has ancient buildings, a wonderful cathedral and castle, with boat trips on the River. South Lincolnshire has flat lands with farms, forests and big skies.
I have a mate who left the UK for NSW in Oz some 46 years ago, has his family over there but comes back every British summer to see us. He says that he loves that first glimpse of Britain as the plane descends, the green patchwork of fields.
I guess what I am trying to say, is that my heart is in my adopted county and I would not want to live anywhere else but my beautiful Lincolnshire village, between the Wolds and the North Sea.
Bloomin' cold in Winter, though!
