I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It is very efficient, so it does not slow down your system very much. I have tried Avast!, and while it is good, it is not as fast as MSE. Unfortunately, there is not a right answer. Different users have different opinions.

+1 from here. I use MSE with Win7 and Vista. Works great. Caught a trojan after my Win7 installation was only 30 minuted old and I was busy downloading programs.

I use Avast but like stated above you'll get a lot of different opinions on this subject. I hear MSE is very good. But I've been using Avast for years so I just kinda stick with what I'm used to. really the most important thing is common sense and due diligence after choosing which ever program you decide on. Fabe

I don't understand the question. What's wrong with all the other flavours of products in the ant-virus arena? Why compare only two, neither of which are top of the league currently?

They are both free and highly rated.

You mean they both have free versions, but the ratings are made on the professional paid for editions. This is precisely why AVG freeware is confused in rankings with its sibling that is not freeware.

Avast and Bitdefender, even so, are hardly the only products with free and paid for versions - so why stop the comparison at these two alone - as I've already queried.

Since the free versions are always hobbled in some way, and the paid/professional builds earn the rankings, it's fair comment to point out that there is a difference and this could substantially prejudice the freeware version in practice ;)

Not all end users seem to realise this...

I use MSE because a friend recommended it and it one the High Five on Lifehacker for free A/V. In the process of recommending it to others on this site, I learned that Avast is high contention for best A/V. I will continue to recommend MSE, but I realize that Avast! is also a very good program.

The choice is obviously a matter of personal preference. I was using Norton IS for years and it did the job. On other systems I also used Kaspersky IS and that also worked well. But both are relatively heavy handed - Norton more than Kaspersky. I switched to MSE depite the fact that I still have valid keys for both products - valid for 1 year and 2 years. MSE is very light footed and seems to do a good job - but of course you never know whether that is just luck.

The choice is obviously a matter of personal preference.

Well it's not much of a choice in that case.

I will recommend Eset way out in front of either contender suggested ;)

Could you please state your reasons? Is it faster, catches more viruses, easier to use?

You could check NOD32's rankings if you doubt it's superior, there are numerous virus ranking sites which attest to the top X number of products and point out their bonuses and weaknesses.
