The issue can be resolved by deleting and recovering the System Reserved partition boot files and space into C, or resizing C from the left by 100mb to extend System Reserved to the right by the same amount.

To delete System Reserved, Mark Win7 Partition Active, boot into Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until C holds the System Active flags. You can then boot free Partition Wizard CD to Delete System Reserved and Resize C into its space: Partition Wizard Move/Resize Partition Video Help.

To resize SysReserved, boot PW CD, rightclick C to Resize by 100mb from the left, click OK. Then rightclick System Reserved to Resize into the space you created from C, OK, Apply both steps.

Ok, I've extended the system partition and it seems to have worked, thanks. Just noticed something else, one of my external disks there are two 0MB unallocated partitions. How come? I can't get rid of them from what I've tried.

I answered your earlier problem in post 158 were I provided the various options to overcome your error.
For the sake of others who don't want to extend their system reserved I give the simple procedure to clear USN journal files from the system reserved partition. This is often all you need to do.


your 0MB issue could be a rounding issue. ie. it isn't actually 0. You could try the bootable (free) Partition Wizard to resize your main partition to pick up some of this tiny unallocated space or just ignore it.

I tried to install Ubuntu, but then deleted the partition it was on. Now I can't boot windows. I tried checking for boot errors from the w7 boot disk, but to no avail. Any way to sort it out?

Mark Win7 or it's 100mb System Reserved (preferred) Partition Active
then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If this fails wipe the HD of GRUB code which can corrupt Win7 beyond repair: Diskpart Clean Command

Then reimage from saved Win7 backup image you should have made of your latest install, or Clean Reinstall.

The start up repair thing hasn't worked. I've got some files on the desktop which I've gotten since the backup. I can't remember the names of then so I won't be able to get them back, is there anyway I can access those files? They were on an external disk a couple of days ago, so I may be able to retrieve them from that.

Forget that, I've managed to boot Ubuntu from the cd, and now I'm moving over the files from the desktop. I'll do a clean install of windows. Should I do the clean command or clean all?

Put a positive spin on on it. You haven't lost any of your data (at least as I recall throughout the thread), your hardware all seems to work, you've got OS install media. And although you spent more time on it than necessary, you've got to admit you've been able to take advantage of some learning opportunities!

Very true, and I've got a faster system, thanks to the clean install, and now Ubuntu seems to be working fine. Now I might not have to ask as many questions because of what I've learnt here.

Guess what! The volume light is still playing up! After install the driver/program, the light changes correctly for about 2 or 3 reboots, then it just stays red all the time. Any ideas? Thanks.

What driver and program are you using? Is this from the computer or device model's Support Downloads webpage? Please post a link.

It's from HP's website, I can't give you a link at the moment for various reasons. I can still mute the computer, even without the software installed.

Do the volume controls work otherwise? Is only the light the problem?

Did the light work correctly when you had preinstalled HP Win7?

Look on the HP Downloads page for your model for any hotfixes for this particular problem. Google the model number and problem description to see if others have dealt with this.

Yeah it's only the light, but I do use it to quickly tell whether it's muted. The light worked before I installed Ubuntu before the reinstall, but not after. I'll give you a link asap.
