Which RAM should I use?

I have never understood this part and can't afford to blow a laptop at this moment. So I am back with probably a silly question.

Following is the screenshot from Speccy for my Toshiba Satellite A505-S6005 installed RAM.

I would like to upgrade it to max, 8GB (2x4GB). I checked crucial.com and it suggested this one.

But if I am comparing correctly, this one seems to be a closest match of whats installed.

Which one is the best fit, the spec suggested by Crucial or what I think to be closest match?

Hi,
Personally I would go with the Crucial from Crucial they have a 100% compatibility guarantee
I have some myself.

The best upgrade for a machine is switching to a ssd of which Crucial BX 100's are pretty darn good too
But you can get them anywhere black Friday is close

I agree with ThrashZone, many great brands to consider but in the end none will perform much better than the Crucial's and they'll take them back till a set works or just take them back.

Yep Crucials are good and I have always used Corsair stuff in my Toshibas. If you want some good info go here Welcome to the G.SKILL TECH FORUM Tradesman is great at advice - don't mind the G Skill stuff either.

Yea I'm not sure why G-Skill doesn't have or I have not seen one anyway but a compatibility/ search for ram upgrades function like Crucial has :/
That imho would help others in a complicated upgrading task

I have only had dealings with Tradesman he tells you straight off the bat and have never had to use this
G.SKILL - RAM Configurator but it seems similar to the Crucial site

Yes I did notice too that the Asus line of mobos was rather compact for want of a better way of putting it. The Crucial had a cast of thousands for Asus boards although I think the G Skill list was fairly comprehensive just takes a little detective work to find your product.

Actually Crucial's you don't have to pick anything but the auto search and it does it's magic something G-Skill needs badly to be customer friendly

Hum I must have got it wrong then because I am sure I had to go though a humongous list of Asus boards but nevertheless it still is good to have it at hand and while I agree the G Skill site could be improved still better than nothing eh?

To me it's nothing because the manufacture is not listed so no sell for G-Skill

This is one of the main points of Crucial's 100% compatibility statement which also equals less frustration and shipping items back which by the way return shipping is a loss to the customer plus a possible restocking fee

Get the exact speed you have in there now, just get 2 4GB sticks.

The only way to know for sure of what you have installed is to look at the label on the stick.

Right now your memory is running at 1066 MHz, which is PC3-8500, so I would triple check the motherboard specs and see if it supports 1600 MHz PC3 12800 before you buy it.

These specs say it has 1066 in it like you`ve found, but don`t mention any memory speed upgrades.

I have 2 4GB PNY 1066/1333 sticks in a box under my desk, used them for 2 months in a work laptop to speed it up, they cost me $19.99 each at Bestbuy, today I see they are up to $45 each

One of those links you posted in a sentence says it`s Mac memory, be careful. (Not sure if it makes a difference, probly doesn`t)

I would get something from a local store so you can return it if they don`t work.

yes Brian I am on my Toshiba L550 right now and it only supports up to the 1066 RAM and I am thinking being a 5 year old machine that the A series would be fairly limited to what speed they support.
My RAM on this machine is 2x4GB Corsair sticks (currently $39 per 4GB - about what I paid for them three years ago) and I do have the Asus ROG lappy at home which takes 1600 RAM but I think the speed on that machine comes from the i7 CPU rather than the RAM - though I stand to be corrected.
In hindsight I would have been better off buying the 8GB stick and kept the extra 4GB - original as a spare.

The MAC RAM appears to be ok to use in Windows machines and the basic difference between Mac and Windows machines is that Mac's are more fussy re the type of RAM they require.
Do PC Laptops and Mac Laptops use the same kind of RAM,as in,can i use the same kind of DDR3 RAM in a Mac as i would a PC? - Engadget

@AddRAM, I checked, none of the links that I posted lists it as Mac memory. Crucial actually says, not mac compatible.

Yes mate well just go with Crucial and what they suggest it is good RAM and for what it is worth many component devices/items have their own particular likes and dislikes for different folks. What I would say is take notice of the bad review stuff that people post as that is relevant.

Pretty darn cheap too I paid about 80.us for my 4x2gb Crucial

That memory is indeed made for Macintosh, and probably won't work in a regular PC.

I just checked. According to Crucial it is not compatible with the OP's laptop.

Hum the searches I did came up with Mac's not liking PC RAM and that most Mac stuff is acceptable to PC's to a point I suppose there will always be the odd bit and piece that won't.

Myself I wouldn't muck around with anything apple based to be honest.
