I intended to buy a new system this winter but life through me a curve and anything new is out of the picture at this point.

So I'm giving in,I'm some what apprehensive about installing 10.

I've read about upgrades and clean installs. Which is easier? If I can get away with not having to install all the programs I now have on this system that's the way I want to go.

Currently using Win 7 Pro on one and Win7 Premium on the other.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well that didn't go very well. I let widows update 4 updates and when it rebooted, well it didn't. Got the boot screen saying that some device was not accessible. {sigh}

Ahh well at 74 years old I guess I shouldn't be messing up a system that has run with no problems for the last five years.

I may look at this again down the road when my life has settled down. Thanks for the help.

I wish I saw your thread earlier because I was going to recommend you do a full disk clone prior to trying this. That way if crap goes wrong (which I knew would) you'd have your clone to clone back to your hard drive with.

If it's possible to fix your issue now I don't know, but I can tell you how to grab your data minus your installed programs from your hard drive that had the unsuccessful Windows 10 install. If you're willing to learn and follow simple instructions I can tell you how. First and foremost, is the 2nd computer that has Windows 7 a desktop or laptop?

Edit-

Have you ever opened and upgraded a desktop before? Such has upgrading a hard drive, a video card, etc? If you're not very computer centric will dictate how I show you how to grab the data off your computer. If your 2nd Windows 7 computer is a laptop this information won't matter.

Did you get past the boot screen message? You have have a device that is not compatible with Windows 10 based on the limited information you posted.

Did you try rebooting again?

When you upgrade or perform a repair install, Windows creates a backup file called Windows.old. It is on your C:drive
I'm 67, so age, I don't consider a hindrance.

What is Windows.old?
The Windows.old folder contains all the files and data from your previous Windows installation. You can use it to restore your system to the old version of Windows if you don't like the new version. ... Essentially, the Windows. old folder just contains the old Windows system.
It is temporary in its original location C:/Windows.old, for 30 days!

I apologize for not saying I had backed up my drive before I attempted anything and had it up and running in 20 minutes. I did not attempt to install Win 10 I just updated Win 7 and those updates caused the the boot problem. What I was trying to figure out is if I could install Win 10 on my system at all with a Microsoft program which required me to me to update Win 7 first.

My wife of 35 years passed suddenly at the end of August and my life is in a state of chaos. Again, I apologize this is not the time to look at this. My mind is just not working very well right now.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I will need it again when my life returns to some sense of normalcy and I can devote my full attention to this project. I will be sure to post my full system specs at that time. Probably near the end of October.

If you plan to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 then there is no need to install the Win 7 updates, it is a complete waste of time as Win 10 will replace the Win 7 components with it's own equivalents.

My suggestion is to keep Win 7 as, in my opinion, is still the best OS.
Don't worry about the M$ end of support. Win 7 will continue to work as it does today for many years.

If your Win 7 is SP1, use Simplix for the updates.
